Alexandra Hotel, Dorset
Lyme Regis, Dorset
The Alexandra has recently undergone a restyling that combines beautifully the traditional and contemporary. The Hotel has thankfully managed to retain its friendly ambience for which it is reputed. Externally the lobby might be in New England with it's weatherboards and gorgeous wisteria. Inside, the communal areas are bright and airy; the lobby has a stunning bonus opening straight out onto the garden from which to enjoy the stunning views of the Bay. There is a decked area thoughtfully positioned here - you decide how best to use it - morning coffee, lunch, afternoon tea or even pre-dinner cocktails at sunset!
The bedrooms are all individually and beautifully decorated in a traditional English style; in fact the hotel is so quintessentially English that you will surely feel at home. Many of the rooms have fabulous coastal and sea views which will help your day start on a grand note - whatever the season. A television with radio, tea and coffee making facility, hairdryer and telephone with modem point are all standard features of each room, as well as fresh mains drinking water.
The rosette awarded Alexandra Restaurant has an excellent "fine dining" reputation where attentive service, white linen, crystal glasses, candles and silverware create a wonderfully elegant atmosphere. The food is complimented by a fantastic award-winning wine list so know that you're in for a treat! I suggest your deciding what to eat on the decking with pre-dinner drinks would be the perfect start to a grown up evening.
And children are most welcome. Family rooms are available, cots can be provided should you just have baby in tow. The children's menu comprises home cooked, fresh and local produce and is available at lunchtime and at 6 o'clock for high tea which might be served in the ‘Conservatory Restaurant', garden or your room. Do note that children under ten are not permitted in the ‘Alexandra Restaurant' for Dinner.
The lovely large garden has a play area with climbing frame, swings, slide and trampoline and is perfect for the children to let off steam and for you to enjoy the view - should you get a minute. The luxurious direct access to Lyme's gorgeous beach means it's a perfect spot for that traditional family beach holiday - even if you need rain-macs it's a joyful place. And it's perfect for whiling away the time wondering what to do next.
So what to do? Search for fossils along the cliffs, build sandcastles on the beach or hunt down crabs in the rock-pools at low tide. Should you take yourselves off on a mackerel fishing trip and get lucky you can even get your catch cooked for the children's tea! This really is such a lovely area and holds many, many places to explore - you need to go and see!
