Shell Cove is ideally situated on the South Devon coast. In an idyllic setting the Gold Award and 4* cottages and apartments in the Georgian Country House have breathtaking sea views and a fabulous secluded beach where kids will love hunting for shells, rock pooling for shrimps or spotting local sea life. And not forgetting Brunel's South Coast Railway follows the base of the cliff, right next to the beach!
Nestling in 4 acres of sub-tropical gardens the numerous facilities and comfortable stylish accommodation provide for a wonderful family holiday. Many guests return every year; some of the regulars have managed to clock up over 40 holidays!
Holiday Cottages and Apartments
The beautiful Georgian house has been converted to accommodate four lovely well-equipped family friendly apartments with the Sea Urchin being the largest, sleeping a family of 6 in 3 bedrooms. A further 3 cottages are located on the grounds and are packed full of nautical charm. These are recent conversions and are decorated to a high standard, sleeping families of 4 to 6 in two bedrooms.
There are superb sea views from the properties. They are stylish and well equipped with central heating, dishwashers, fridge and freezers, and full size cookers. The attractive lounges have TV with DVD, CD players and radios. Bathrooms have bath and showers. Bedrooms range from twin, to Super king size beds. All linen and towels provided. All properties have patios for al fresco dining.
Many services are provided for families including cots with cot linen, high chairs, excellent laundry facilities, toddler kitchenware, meal ordering service and a reception service where you will be assisted with most requirements.
Facilities for children of all ages
There are many facilities for all year round. A splendid heated outdoor swimming pool overlooking the sea and a heated toddlers pool with little fountain to play in provide cooling down splash times. Both pools are open May - September. Tennis court, croquet lawn, volleyball net and children's play area including a very special Wendy house. Indoors is a large games room with toddler's toys, table tennis and bar football along with books and games to borrow for all ages. The children often get together for games of cricket, or football on the extensive lawns.
The private beach at Shell Cove
The exclusive beach is accessed via a locked gate to keep children safe within Shell Coves grounds. There are around 140 steps to navigate down the cliff path with seated resting points along the way. The red sandstone cliffs are a striking backdrop to the beach, which is a beautiful natural haven with sand and shingle. You can watch the trains as they weave in and out of the tunnels by the sea. At high tide the beach is great for fishing and swimming or children will love beachcombing with the prospect of finding treasure (unusual shells). There are access friendly beaches within a short drive or bus ride.
Location and things to do
On the doorstep there are numerous attractions including farms, castles, theme parks, and award winning beaches. You can walk to the local pretty town of Dawlish on the coastal footpath and use a buggy! The local pub, the Smugglers is ideal for families and just a few minutes walk.
Shell Cove is ideally located between the picturesque towns of Dawlish and Teignmouth and within easy reach of Torquay, Exeter and Plymouth. The South Devon Railway was built to the designs of Isambard Kingdom Brunel and hugs the coast beneath the cliffs of Shell Cove. Take a most memorable train ride as it follows tidal waters for about 13 miles, 4 of which are open sea.
Open all year. Short breaks are available out of the main season. June and September are ideal months for families with toddlers and babies.
