Torridge House Farm Cottages, Devon
Child Friendly Cottages on a small Farm, North Devon
Tucked away in the Devon countryside 9 cottages are very well equipped and offer a range of styles and sizes to suit families and friends holidaying together. The nine cottages are welcoming, comfortable and well appointed. Blackout linings/blinds the norm. Nightlights, bedguards, full sized cots, highchairs and stair gates are freely available. The cottages are warm and cosy with central heating and either log fires (or log burning stoves) or real flame effect electric fires. Kitchens are newly fitted out with full electric cookers, microwaves, washing machines and dryers.
The small, friendly, family-run farm has panoramic views of glorious Devon countryside and has lots of animals to help feed .Youngsters are actively encouraged in the twice daily feeding of the pigs, piglets, chickens, ducks, mice, rabbits and guinea pigs. Children are wonderful, enjoying everthing with a complete lack of concern about what the weather throws at them! Puddles are for splashing in, mud is for squelching in, grassy banks are all the better for rolling down when they are wet.
There is plenty of room to play in the gardens, a heated outdoor summer swimming pool, tennis/football area, BBQs, games room with pool, table tennis, a playroom and library of games makes this an ideal basis for a memorable family holiday.
Enjoy a bit of grown up time with the highly acclaimed baby sitting service at £6 per hour. If you get fed up of cooking and need a break, enjoy the option to choose a variety of frozen gourmet style meals by the local chef. I would also highly recommend you to take the opportunity of ordering your groceries from Tesco to be delivered to your cottage ready for your arrival. It frees up valuable space in the car and you don't have to worry about dashing to the shops for necessities as soon as you arrive.
Enjoy nearby Ceramics Studio on the small holding next door, Marina's wonderful messages and reflexology, RHS Rosemoor Gardens at the bottom of the hill, Dartington Crystal in Torrington and the Village Hall for your own skittles session or a game of badminton.
Situated in a glorious part of north Devon in an area rich in beautiful countryside, country villages, market towns, fishing villages, seaside towns, friendly people, welcoming pubs, good food, excellent attractions, blue flag beaches. There are plenty of child friendly eating-places from 5 to 20 minutes by car. Torridge House is very well placed for family attractions as well. Amongst the many special places are The Big Sheep, The Gnome Reserve, Soft Play, Pirate Ship, Rosemoor Gardens, Dartington Crystal and 1646. The natural beauty of North Devon can be explored on countryside trails and enjoyed on the many sandy beaches, including Blue Flag Westwood Ho! - 2 miles of golden sand backed by a unique pebble ridge.
Please to note that a car is essential here for young families as walking with little ones on local roads without pavements is not practical.

Got back today. 2 cottages (Lin and Hay) for two families with 2 year olds. This is the most child friendly place I have ever been to with so much to do and so very friendly. Feeding of the animals twice a day, toddler toys outside cottage with plenty of play areas, dvd and book library, children's play room and pool/table tennis room. All wonderful. So sad to be home! We will be back.

We were just at Torridge Cottage in June 2011 for a week. We have one son, 6 years old, who, on the very first day, already dreaded leaving the farm :-)
This is our second farm stay in 6 months, and I must say that Torridge is truly a family friendly place. Everything is well thought-out, but the highlights as far as we are concerned are:
1. Good sized kitchen and Torrington was so near/easy by car to grab groceries
2. Awesome library with children's DVDs/Videos
3. Well thought out farm for children to explore, including washing/disinfecting stations in the animal rooms, even the motion sensing soap dispensers
4. Superb laundry room with detergent/dryers
5. Awesome farm guide who will, every morning and evening, bring the kids around to feed the animals and take care of the barns, etc
6. Small animals playroom even has child seating around a low table for kids to play
7. PLENTY of outdoor spaces to run and play, with numberous play cars, tricycles and even a mini-soccer field
8. Adequate internet access for our room (we were staying just 6 metres from the access point)
We were there for 5 days, and did not even have enough time to explore the indoor playroom (our afternoons were spent exploring the area, and fishing in many of the lakes nearby)
Nice touches:
1. Recycling bins for almost everything
2. Children's rooms are colorful and attractively decorated, even down to the wastepaper basket
3. Chair in bathroom (would have been much appreciated if we went there when our kid was younger), non-slip mat for bathtub
4. Wash troughs for dirty wellies outside the mini-barns
Areas of improvement (just sayin' :-) )
1. Availability of more loaner wellies
2. Sharper kitchen knives will actually be safer
3. longer range wireless access points (we are geeks)
Recommendation for future farm stayers:
1. get to know your neighbour, and provide plenty of time for the kids to interact
2. don't buy too much food as the nearby town is so close
3. do a little bit of research on nearby areas before arriving (although the guide book provided by the Torridge farms people were already mile ahead of anything we have ever seen)
Other info: Took us 6 hours to drive from Peak District, and 6 hours to Central London (traffic, meal stops and getting lost a couple of times inclusive, driving mostly below the posted limit)
We truly enjoyed our stay, and only wished we booked more days at the farm instead of heading back to London for our last 4 remaining days in the UK :-)
