Billingsmoor - a Feather Down farm, Devon
Cullompton, Devon
Days in Billingsmoor's picture-postcard setting can be spent meeting the animals - which include Kunekune pigs, sheep, ducks, geese and chickens, and the herd of gentle Friesians - or sending the kids off for a day in the farm's Wild Wanderers forestry school. Farmer's wife Jayne Lammie's fantastic farm tour teaches of the challenges and rewards of organic farming, and there are calves to meet year-round, dens to build, or Meg the spaniel to play with... Perhaps most interesting to mum and dad will be the hot tub that can be pre-booked and set up just outside your tent!
As at all of Feather Down's farms, the 10 tents here (which make it perfect for groups) are spacious and comfortable, with their own flushing loo, simple kitchen with wood-burning stove, large dining table and space enough for up to six to bed down. Though there's a bunk bed and a double, each in its own room, it's the cupboard bed the kids will squabble over, with its little heart-shaped windows in the doors and cosy log cabin feel. What you find when you unzip the tent's canvas frontage is the ultimate in picture windows, showing a view of verdant rolling countryside by day and open, tranquil skies by night.
The Lammies' Farm Larder, which runs on an honesty shop basis, is famed for its plethora of options - from hampers and homemade meals, to cakes and casked ales, to a soup or stew package allowing you to cook a campfire meal outside your tent.
In summary you'll want for nothing at Billingsmoor Farm - this is comfy camping in delightful Devon with the lovely Lammies!
