Brockwood Hall Lodges, Cumbria
Lake District Holiday Lodges, Brockwood Hall, Cumbria
Brockwood Hall dates back to the
Victorian era and boasts many original features. This historic building houses
the reception, restaurant and bar. Within the estates beautiful grounds a
variety of wooden lodges have been built to suit families of varying sizes and
budgets. Located close to the magnificent Lake District, yet far
away enough to avoid the crowds and still be in the midst of unspoilt natural
beauty.
We had fun tying to locate the correct lodge to our keys
as you are given a map of the estate and the lodges are found by name not
numerically. It does give you chance to take in the stunning surroundings that
Brockwood Hall is nestled in. The lodges that command the best spot for the
views were the ones positioned at the front perimeter of the estate. Sitting
outside on the veranda with the sun beating down felt blissful, just taking in
those glorious views across Whicham Valley towards the Cumbrian
coastline.
The Self Catering Holiday Lodges
Of the 32 lodges dotted around the grounds of Brockwood
Hall the most striking ones are the modern Viken lodges, with their large glass
fronts, spacious interiors and fantastic views. Families can enjoy 3 en-suite
bedrooms, all with TV sets, sauna room and large living area with, amongst the
log burning stove & pull down bed for extra guests.
Some of the older style lodges are currently being
updated and have new kitchens, showers and furniture. The proportions of the
smaller lodges are such that the bedrooms are compact giving the living areas
more spacious dimensions in which to enjoy social times as a family.
Family Facilities
The heated indoor swimming pool was
not huge but big enough for the children to splash around and have fun in.
Access to this building is via a security pad as the swimming pool is unmanned
with children needed parental supervision at all times. The changing areas with
lockers are pretty basic and don’t forget you need to pack your own towels for
swimming! The pools opening times are 9am - 9pm, with
the last hour being for adults only.
The
outdoor children’s area is a fun place for kids to meet other little ones on
holiday. It is the ideal spot to let them unleash their energy with rope nets,
slide, climbing frame and fireman's pole providing the kids with plenty to let
their imagination run wild.
The beautiful lawns are ideal for a
spot of cricket or a barbeque. The peacocks preening themselves in full
show-off mode was a fascinating display for the kids. Nature is always close at
hand during your stay at Brockwood and there is a nature trail taking you
through the woods and round the resort. A badger sett has been active for many
years now and, during the dark nights, badgers can be seen emerging ready to
get their intake of food.
Brockwood Hall Restaurant, Bar and
Lounge
The restaurant, found inside the historic Brockwood Hall,
gives families the option to let the chef of the family a night off! (please note no food Tuesdays and Wednesdays).
There is also a bar and snack area with kids menus. You can even order from the
take-away menu, with the option to have meal delivered to your lodge. This is
such a good idea when on holiday with small children needing an early night. Upstairs
there is also a games room housing a pool table. There is WiFi available in the bar but it is on the
understanding that guests buy at least one drink.
Things to do in the South Lakes
As well as staying in beautiful surroundings it only
takes about 5-10mins to drive to the coast. The best beach we found was at
Silecroft - a relaxed coastal village a few miles to the north of Millom on the
A 5093. When the tide is out, a
gentle slope over smooth loose stones leads to a wide expanse of safe sandy
beach. South Lakes Wild Animal Park,
Muncaster Castle and Ravenglass & Eskdale railway are within a short drive
away.
And finally…
Brockwood Hall is quite a drive from the main Lake
District attractions. However if your idea for a relaxing family holiday is to
avoid the tourist hotspots and enjoy a thoroughly stunning setting in the South
Lakes then you couldn’t wish for a more perfect spot.
