If you're looking to get away from it all in a peaceful, countryside setting then Cologin near Oban on the west coast of Scotland is just the place. The location is picture perfect - huddled in the surrounding hills surrounded by wild Scottish countryside and you couldn't be further away from the stresses of city living. A ‘haven in the hills' it is indeed.
Cologin is a family run site and has 14 lodges, 4 chalets, and 2 cottages on offer; from a 1 bedroom cottage to a 5 bedroom farmhouse and you can specify if you want pet free or pet friendly. Their Inner Hebridean Lodge is recommended for families. It has two large bedrooms, one double and one twin, and a large open plan lounge with a double fold-down sofa bed. There are different set up options available depending on how many are staying so ask when you book. All have modern, well presented kitchens with everything you need. The Outer Hebridean lodges have one bedroom and a single sofa bed and so can sleep 2/3 but I would not recommend these for families. Cots are available if required but bring your own linen. Towels can be hired for the lodges if you don't want to bring your own. There's a laundry on site with coin operated washers and driers.
If you are planning to have large gathering of friends/family then there's Cologin Farmhouse. It can sleep up to 10 adults and 5 children. It has 5 bedrooms - one ground floor room with a kingsize bed and en-suite shower room, one triple room with a double and single bed and washbasin, one family room with twin beds, bunk beds and day bed and en-suite and finally one standard double bedroom. It also has two family bathrooms. The lounge has an open fire and the dining room has double doors leading out to the patio and BBQ area. And of course a farmhouse kitchen for those big family breakfasts. Towels are included in your stay at the farmhouse.
Cologin has its own country pub and restaurant - The Barn - which is the heart of estate (and where you'll get your access to the wi-fi if you need it). This is a friendly and cosy establishment which also offers live music from local musicians who play regularly throughout the year. They use the best fresh local produce and vegetarians are particularly well catered for. Kids can choose from the children's menu or ½ portions from the daily blackboard specials. You can also get carry outs and take away meals to enjoy in your lodge if you don't fancy cooking and, if you order when booking, you can have a freshly prepared plated meals in your fridge ready to be reheated in your microwave on arrival so you don't have to cook if you've had a long tiring journey. Oban is 15 minutes away by car for supplies and has all the usual supermarkets, chemists, shops etc along with a full range of eating out places.
The estate has its own loch which is a gentle 1 mile walk away where you can fish for brown trout for free as a resident, either from the loch edge or by hiring the boat to go out onto the loch. (Buoyancy aids are available). They'll let you borrow some rods etc if you don't have your own. There's a small kids playpark on site and the area has superb walks and forest trails all around. With a myriad of things to do and places to visit in and around Oban, Cologin makes a great base. This is a true get away from it all location and with no ‘street lights' (torches are supplied for getting around after dark) the stars fill the sky on a clear night and you may even glimpse the northern lights if you are lucky.
Cologin is recommended by Away with the Kids. Visit their website from the link above for much more detail about Cologin and the surrounding area.

Been twice before. All staff so helpful and friendly. Our muttleys were happy, we borrowed their labrador and the donkey for walks through their own woods to their own loch. So laid back we nearly fell over, and no great distance from the bar to the lodge. All facilities we could ever want. Looking forward to trying some Scottish hospitality again soon. Thank you all.
