Cuckoo Down Farm is the perfect place for families with a sense of adventure. Enjoy 30 acres of meadows and woodland, teeming with wildlife, unchanged for the past hundred years, whilst camping in relative luxury. The farm is a mile from the nearest roads and has five fields and a three-acre oak wood with a pretty stream running through it - perfect for dam building. Look out for swallows, foxes, rabbits, badgers, deer and owls. The owners John and Becky Sheaves have installed three beautiful handmade yurts and two luxury safari tents into a six-acre meadow for truly inspiring breaks away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life in beautiful unspoilt Devon countryside.
The Holiday Yurts and Safari Lodges - luxury camping!
There are two safari tents and three yurts to choose from. Each has its own compost loo, kitchen, standpipe of drinking water, campfire and wood burning stove.
The 18ft diameter yurts are beautifully furnished, each with a lovely double bed, two sofa beds complete with quilts and pillows, a wood burning stove for chilly evenings and rugs on the floor. The yurts can sleep a maximum of 4 adults or a family of 6 with children. Wander outside to find your own well-equipped sheltered kitchen area, with all crockery, cultlery, utensils, pans etc that you are likely to need, tea towels and washing up liquid are even provided. You also have your own picnic table/bench for eating at, a drinking water standpipe, and your own compost toilet in a little shed with a sink.
Inside the safari tent, there are two separate bedrooms, one with a double bed, the other with two single beds. In the large living area there is also a kingsized sofa bed, dining table and chairs, woodburning stove and kitchen area. Safari tents can accommodate up to six people.
There are hot showers available on the farm a short walk away from the yurts, together with use of a fridge, washing machine and tumble dryer and a useful socket for charging mobile phones.
For Children and Parents
The kids benefit from unlimited fresh air and the freedom of exploration. Children can play in the woods, dam the stream and build dens. There's space for cricket, rounders, football, bike-riding and tree-climbing. They can even help bottle feed the lambs, or gather eggs from the henhouse - perfect for that morning fry-up. Children will be thrilled to pet and groom the resident Dartmoor pony, Ebony. Parents can revel in the satisfaction that comes with getting away from it all and getting back to nature: gazing at the stars through the skylight, toasting marshmallows by the campfire and waking up to witness the sun rising over rolling countryside.
There is a small honesty shop on the farm which sells a few items, and you can also purchase more logs/kindling if required for a very reasonable price. There is a shop within walking distance which sells a wide range of goods. You can borrow a travel cot and/or high chair. Please remember to book in advance: £3 travel cot, £2 high chair per visit. The owners also thoughtfully provide free toyboxes - let them know whether you want one for under-threes or over-threes.
Kara, a qualified yoga teacher, can offer Reiki and also "Yogini" classes - children's magical yoga adventures in your yurt or outside on the grass. A great way to ensure you have relaxed, chilled-out children and parents, whilst on holiday.
Please note there is a shallow stream on site and a pond (well-fenced and gated) 500 yards away - do keep an eye on very young children.
