Hogchester Cottage

Child friendly cottage, Dorset

About Hogchester Cottage

Hogchester is an idyllic farm cottage set amidst 60 acre's of Dorset's pretty countryside. The dream of Chantal and Rob Powell, the couple are set to restore disused agricultural land to wild-flower meadows, run art classes and generally provide a haven for winding down and re-charging. Hogchester offers the chance to check out the fruit in the orchard, go pond-dipping, take a picnic and sit under the old oak tree - enjoy the simple things in life that so very easily pass us by. Should you want to explore the area the beach at Charmouth is just a mile away and lots of lovely towns such as Lyme Regis and Axminster are nearby.

My family loved this place, the children begged to stay – that speaks volumes.

Accommodation Facilities

The pretty cottage is next to the main picture box farm house.  It comfortably sleeps 4 people in two bedrooms, both on the first floor. There's one spacious double which will comfortably fit a cot that your hosts are happy to provide and a twin with views across the valley to the sea.  There is a family shower room with a heated towel rail, washbasin and toilet.

Downstairs the lounge area is cosy and welcoming with a log burner (a starter basket of logs is provided by the farm), a comfy sofa, well stocked book and DVD shelves, local maps, games, jigsaws, Wi-Fi and a music playing whilst charging iPod/phone/pad.

The charming country kitchen has the quintessential oil fired Aga, (Chantal has laminated instructions for use!), has beautiful views across the meadows to the sea and is very well equipped for anything adults, children and babies might need, including high chairs and steriliser.  There is a handy downstairs loo too.

What's There?

The accommodation is good, very good in fact, but the clincher with Hogchester Farm is the farm is itself.  Your own mini nature reserve, 60 acres of land for you and your little adventurers to roam and discover.  Rob and Chantal have a haven at Hogchester and their intentions are beyond providing lovely accommodation for lovely families.  The farm has charitable trust status for the restoration of wild flower meadows which will introduce a cacophony of flowers, insects and birds to the area that have been destroyed over a number of years.

Hogchester is a perfect combination to get your children reconnected with the ‘real’ outdoors. The 60 acres provide a real nature's playground - the thing that I and, possibly more importantly, my children loved was the freedom and fresh air including rope ladders up the ole old oak tree – it was a challenge!  Tyre swings, ponds with wildlife, woodland and a stream with a treasure hunt; a wonderful spin on the traditional hunt where you must navigate your way down the stream to find the clues, be sure to pack your wellies.

If you like a more relaxed outdoor experience then egg collecting, trampolining, bat spotting, star gazing, animal watching (the sheep and cute pygmy goats), table tennis or simply knocking a ball around the yard, these activities are literally on the doorstop.  The resident Guinea foul Hilary and Fenton definitely need a mention, these guys have been part of this land for many years and will brighten up your already bright day.  As additional extras, treat yourselves to an early evening campfire near the orchard with sparklers, hot choc and marshmallows or, once night time comes, head up to one of the hillside meadows with a hurricane lamp and a bottle of wine, lay back and gaze away because the location of Hogchester means unpolluted views of the skies.  A pre-prepared campfire, loungers and blankets will be provided.  Nature at its best.

Loal Area

Just off the A35, Hogchester is easy to find and enviably placed.  The Jurassic coast is a short ride away.  Charmouth is the nearest village, traditional with sandy beaches, paddling, rock pooling for littlies and fossil hunting for the oldies, plenty to keep you entertained here with organised fossil hunts from the local museum which sits next to the coffee shop just off the beach car park.  The museum is worth a visit to see the plethora of fossil finds off nearby beaches.

Lyme Regis is a short drive away, bigger and busier than Charmouth but no less charming with good restaurants to be found, along with boutique shops and Cobb harbour, a historical place with lots to keep you occupied.

Devon is on the doorstep and there is always the rest of the Dorset playground to keep you occupied.
