About Kilconquhar Castle Estate

Kilconquhar Castle Estate is a child friendly luxury holiday resort set in 130 acres, just a few minutes from Elie and 15 minutes from St Andrews in the East Neuk of Fife. For a fabulous self catering holiday, including full week holidays and short breaks, choose from Kilconquhar Castle's villas, castle suites and historic cottages.

Gary, Catherine and the girls visited:

Located on the east coast of Scotland in the ancient Kingdom of Fife, Kilconquhar Castle Estate and Country Club is a couple of miles from the village of Elie and 15 minutes drive south of St Andrews. The castle, which dates back to the 13th century, is today a retreat for those who want to get away from it all. Nestling in over 130 acres of rich beautiful woodlands, Kilconquhar is a mix of villas, castle suites and historical cottages, each distinctive but luxurious.

Settling in we found all the comforts of home. Standards here are very high and everything was clean and well maintained. All that was missing from the villa when we arrived were supplies of groceries. You can of course bring them with you, but we ordered them online from Tesco (or Asda) for home delivery an hour or so after we had planned to arrive. Once settled in it was time to explore.

Facilities on Site

Kilconquhar offers golf, gym, tennis and horse riding facilities along with salon and health and beauty specialists to pamper you. Their kids club runs supervised activities throughout the day including arts, crafts and games in their indoor play area, and outdoor activities too (weather permitting) and my daughters loved it. The pool's not big but offers a good chance to relax and swim and is available to all guests. We found bike (and child seat) hire if we had wanted to get out on two wheels and with an outdoor trampoline, tennis court and acres and acres of field and woodland to explore (including the hidden fort!) the kids had no end of fun exploring and playing. Bring some bat and ball games or a football with you as there's tons of space around each villa to make use of.

Their stables are British Horse Society & Trekking and Riding Society approved for both novice and more accomplished riders. My daughters had never been on a horse before and were a little nervous, but as they are the main centre for the Riding for the Disabled Association in the area there was no need to worry. ‘Can we do it again daddy pleeeease...!!!' was the cry all the way back to the villa.

A Place to Eat

If you don't fancy cooking there's the White Cockade bistro style restaurant on site. It has a very welcoming homely feel to it and no ‘shushing' of the kids required as the atmosphere lends itself to them with a selection of puzzles, word games and colouring pictures (with a copious supply of pencils) to keep them occupied if needed. The menu is very reasonably priced (I can recommend the Kilconquhar burger) and a children's menu is available for children under 12. You shouldn't be restricted to the estate for eating out though as the surrounding area also offers a host of places. Use local knowledge and speak to the reception team for some recommendations.

At Kilconquhar you're ideally placed to visit some of Scotland's finest cities with Edinburgh and Stirling an hour away by car. Fife has some of the best beaches in the country and with the home of golf just up the road, a visit to St Andrews is a must. There are many visitor attractions around to choose from and we found a handy booklet in the villa to help whet our appetite and plan what to see and do.

So what do we think?

Whether it's a quiet relaxing getaway, activities galore or a base from which to explore and experience the finest on offer in Scotland, Kilconquhar has it all. Kids are made to feel very welcome indeed and with lots to do and places to explore in the estate it's an ideal destination for a weekend break, or a longer stay, so do check out their website for info and offers.
