Kingston Estate

Child friendly large group, Devon

About Kingston Estate

Kingston Estate really is a great place to stay for old and young alike. Surrounded by beautiful Devonshire countrside we loved the feel of the whole place; the design and decor in the holiday cottages, the fact that it’s family run, the friendliness of the staff, the gorgeous setting and the lovely little extra touches for guests. We can’t wait to go back; a family holiday with our toddler will be another story!

Located near Totnes, Devon, in the rolling countryside of Staverton, the newly renovated Kingston Estate is set in huge grounds, has fantastic facilities and is a perfect for families.  Ben, Fraser and I met with owner Sarah on a warm April morning to be shown round.  She and her husband took over last year and have rehauled the place completely, resulting in everything done up to an impeccable standard.  The cottages are beautifully furnished and comfortable and of course child-friendly; the Estate is immaculate offering idyllic grounds to explore and wander around having an adventure - together they make for a wonderfully relaxed family break.

The Estate comprises nine cottages of varying sizes, each with slightly different features. Interiors are stylish yet relaxing, comfortable and welcoming, importantly simple and uncluttered, perfect with toddlers around; all are spotlessly clean and and all very well appointed. Sarah does make a point of having treats (usually homemade cakes!) ready for your arrival - a great start to your holiday.

The fully fitted kitchens and dining areas provide for the self-catering element nicely, high-chairs are available on request.  The comfy leather sofas, wood-burning stoves and relaxed lounges, along with the flat screen television and DVD player provide for the collapsing at the end of the day or a mid-afternoon wind down session in front of CBeebies.  A DVD library has plenty of options for the all family to watch.

Child friendly must-haves are taken care of with a selection of cots and bed linen, sterilisers and pushchairs; all available on request. The cottages each have their own private gardens with furniture to allow toddlers some space to roam outdoors freely and you to quietly enjoy your surroundings.

Cottages sleep from two to six people and booked out together can sleep a party of 36 - thus Kingston is an ideal venue for a big family gathering allowing independence for multi-generational groups - space is very important with children around!

To Do

Outdoors you will find a wonderful communal play area including climbing frame, swings, little tikes slides for toddlers and a trampoline.  This is the place they will disappear to straight after breakfast and you won’t mind as having a little (safe) freedom on holiday makes a huge difference.

The small indoor swimming pool will be a hit with all of the family whatever the weather, but particularly when the heavens open and you really don’t want to drive out somewhere - the games room offers more opportunity to get competitive with the family or meet up with new friends.  The sauna is a treat if you want to grab 20 minutes quiet time.

Should you fancy exploring by other means there is a horse riding school just  five minutes walk away that caters for all abilities. You also have free use of a health club and golf course 20 minutes drive away.

Local area

Blackpool Sands - this comes recommended by Sarah. It’s a beautiful shingle beach with turquoise sea, surrounded by evergreens. The water is clear and there is plenty at this lovely beach for all the family - kayaks and snorkels to hire, a cafe, a shop, showers and toilets. (This is a dog free beach) It’s around a 30-40 minute drive from the Kingston Estate.

South Devon Railway - Staverton station is very close to the Kingston Estate - hop on the steam train and travel to Totnes.

Pennywell Farm Activity Centre - the largest farm tourist attraction in South West England. See lots of farm animals and go on a tractor and trailer ride!
