We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with the SYHA so that you might enjoy inexpensive, quality, approved accommodation in some fantastic locations. And Lochranza comes up trump's on all of the above.
Surrounded by hills and opposite a thirteenth-century ruined castle, this lochside hostel has recently been fully refurbished (2010) and is a wonderful place to relax. With two lounges, internet room, fantastic kitchen and excellent eating area, I had trouble remembering this was a youth hostel to be honest! Key card entry to the individual rooms adds security to your stay, clean and new toilet and shower rooms, comfortable ‘non squeeky' bunks and family rooms that sleep two adults and up to three kids this place truly has everything. In addition to your own provisions to cook in a kitchen as equipped as any I've seen they'll provide you with a continental breakfast and even a packed lunch for around a fiver each meal if you mention it the day before.
SYHA state "Children and families are welcome at all our hostels, although we have highlighted a number of hostels within our network as being "Family Hostels" as they are particularly well-suited to travelling with and entertaining younger children. Family hostels not only have private rooms available, many with en-suite facilities, they also carry practical items such as travel cots, high chairs, microwaves and toys. In addition there is normally a TV and games room as well as extensive private gardens on site where the kids can let off some steam. Close to great attractions and activities, these family hostels offer a great base from which to explore the area. Our helpful staff are a great source of knowledge on places to visit and things to see and do. Hostelling is a very friendly and relaxed way to travel and our ethos actively involves children."
Lochranza is classed as a "family hostel" and it does exactly what is says on the tin.
If you're interested in its eco status it has heat exchangers that use the wasted heat from the rooms to heat the water, the toilets flush with rainwater and motion sensors ensure the lights are only on when they need to be.
You can observe spectacular wildlife from right on the doorstep or tackle the many trails and ridges. Goat Fell (874m) is the island's highest peak, whilst the finest low level trek on the island, the Cock of Arran trail, starts and finishes at the Hostel. Arran has many other activities on offer including off-road biking, pony-trekking, fishing, golfing and watersports. Lochranza Youth Hostel is open from 11th March until the 29th October and weekends in November and December. The hostel can be rented for exclusive use outwith these times.
It's one of the finest I've seen in Scotland and definitely gets the thumbs up from me. Viewed and approved.
