Experience a family break with a difference and enjoy the glorious scenery.

The Long Valley Yurts Low Wray site is a large spectacularly located campsite on the quiet western shore of Windermere, England’s largest lake. A beautiful site with stunning 360 degree views from the door of your Yurt or Bell Tent providing a quite retreat for families and friends. Long Valley Yurts offer the perfect combination of back-to-nature living, without compromising on all the usual luxuries you would wish for on your holiday. It’s the perfect base for all sorts of outdoor activities, from simply exploring the mountains, paddling by the waters edge, cycling through breathtaking scenery or, for the more adventurous canoeing, climbing and mountain biking.

We love to be happy campers and having the luxury of bowling up to a weather proof Yurt or Bell Tent in the middle of the Lake District just takes the hassle factor away from pitching up your own tent especially when camping with kids. You will even have extra boot space for holiday packing as you won't need half the stuff you normally take for conventional camping. Long Valley Yurts offer the perfect combination of back-to-nature living, without compromising on all the usual luxuries you would wish for on your holiday. Spacious with comfortable beds, warm duvets, cosy wood burning stoves and lanterns, this really is luxury camping or ‘Glamping' as we like to call it!

Situated within the National Trust Campsite at Low Wray on Windermere there are three 16ft Yurts (March-November) and three 16ft Bell Tents (May-September). The Yurts located right on the waters edge offer the adventurous spirit a swift pre-breakfast dip in Windermere for a great way to start the day. The Bell Tents are located a short walk from the shores of the lake in a secluded area of the site overlooked by the grandeur of High Wray Castle and stunning views all around. The site offers the perfect base for an array of activities and excursions.

The Yurts

Three yurts each of 16ft in diameter will sleep up to five people comfortably. There is a standard double bed and two twin single beds which can be split to make four single beds. Freshly laundered cotton sheets, pillow cases and duvets are provided. Each yurt has it's own unique Moroccan feel with wooden floors and furnished with thick colourful hand made Moroccan rugs, lanterns, and colourful throws and poufs. They are built on wooden floors and are fully insulated using locally sourced Herdwick sheep's wool. Fully equipped with all cooking and cleaning facilities including a wood burning stove with an integrated oven. Games, maps and local information pack are thoughtfully provided.

The Bell Tents

The Bell Tents are a simple design which have stood the test of time. The outside cover, which is made from a thick poly-cotton canvas, hangs down from a central pole and is held in place with guy ropes, creating a delightful old-fashioned shape. Strong enough to withstand all the Lake District can throw at it, they are fully waterproof and when the sun is shining you can roll up the sides enjoy the breeze and let the outside in. Spacious with comfortable beds, cosy wood burning stoves and lanterns, this really is camping in luxury. Being 5m in diameter they are big enough for five people to sleep in quite happily. Each have been raised off the ground to allow natural ventilation. With wooden floors and Moroccan rugs they hold in the warmth and provide all the comfort you need for the ideal family holiday. For those with a sense of adventure, who are not ready to rough it - this is the option for you.

There are four comfortable futon style beds, consisting of four single mattresses, which conveniently and easily turn into seating during the day. A blow up mattress can be supplied for an additional person if required. Try your hand at cooking in the bon-fire kitchen. Situated just outside each bell tent it's somewhere between the Wild West and Windermere. Or a fully equipped and functional kitchen includes all the things you are likely to need for five people to cook and dine with. Either way, cooking in the natural outdoors seems to taste better! A games chest is full of entertainment for times when you're just too comfortable to go outside.

Low Wray Facilities

The shop and reception are located in centre of the campsite with a wide range of products for sale, including local meats and bakery products and a local information point. There are newly refurbished toilet and shower blocks and also a new picnic and children's play area. A brand new bird hide is located near reception where you can watch our feathered friends from the specially constructed viewing platform. You are able to launch your own boat/canoe directly from the campsite into Lake Windermere.

Yurt Holiday Extras

There are numerous Outdoor Activities on offer from the site including Canadian Canoeing/Moonlit Canoeing and Into the Wild Bushcraft and Survival Courses. In addition Gorge Scrambling, Rock Climbing or a Mountain Day are available from the Great Langdale site. Bicycle hire is also available from the site reception. ?A map from the on-site shop for £1.50 gave my kids a chance to do a spot of orienteering. It can take a couple of hours to do so we tackled the challenge spread over a few days. There are children's activity packs available at reception with suggested campsite-based activities for young children. Wray Castle can be spotted from the campsite and has some lovely walks around its grounds to the lakeshores.

Low Wray is close to all central Lakes attractions including several National Trust Houses and Gardens and the Beatrix Potter Gallery. Alternatively take time to explore some of the local villages (nearest towns are Ambleside and Hawkshead - both 3 miles away), sample some of Grasmere's famous gingerbread, take tea at one of the numerous tea shops, there's something on offer for everyone.

And Finally...

Back at the Yurt or Bell Tent after a day out sit back, relax and enjoy the crackle of logs and the warmth of the wood burning stove, roast marsh mellows over the open fire and reconnect with the things that are important in your life.
