This has got to be my favourite West End hotel – absolutely perfect location for a family trip taking in the sights and a West End Show. It is literally on the door step of Mamma Mia, The Lion King and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory so you can’t go wrong.
We were given a warm welcome on arrival and Deborah looked after us, making the kids feel like important guests in their own right. She encouraged us to use the concierge to make the most of our stay but she had a number of insider tips of her own, not least the Italian icecream parlour a few steps from the hotel.
One Aldwych is a mini oasis right at the heart of Convent Garden, yet so calm and free of the hustle and bustle on the door step. The lobby bar does get extremely busy, especially early evening, as you would expect and although we were made to feel welcome, its not ideal for kids. However, the Indigo restaurant is on the mezzanine floor and has a very relaxed atmosphere and we felt really at home. The restaurant team were amazing with kids (aged 7 and 10). They staff were really genuine and happy to chat to the kids as they ordered their meals. No-one seemed to mind that my son was determined to watch Champions League football on his ipad at the table and my daughter was engaged with colouring in Disney characters that were provided. The children’s menu had a good variety of healthy tasty dishes and also good soups for starters – the chicken noodle was practically a meal in itself. My kids were pretty exhausted after a day of travelling so went for the macaroni cheese, but there were free range sausages, corn fed chicken and fish of the day to tempt bigger appetites. We ordered room service for our desserts – which was seamless in its efficiency. The whole evening was focused on the kids but everything was so relaxed I really chilled out.
The rooms are really special – great supply of organic toiletries, tea from The Tea Palace and the highlight for me was the Nespresso machine – with supplies topped up frequently and without a fuss. Full marks. There were little touches left in the room – tips for places to eat and visit and I liked the book which is placed in all the rooms ‘Change the world 9 to 5’ which also sums up the ethos of One Aldwych.
For the kids, the favourite part of our stay was the swimming pool (chlorine free), with its underwater music and undersea scene projected onto the wall. They would’ve been happy to stay in the pool all day and were encouraged to snack on the fresh fruit provided. I was just happy indulge in the supply of high end magazines to pass the time in between sneaky dips into the steam room.
Breakfast in the Indigo restaurant was a fairly lavish affair. I would say there was a good mix of tourists and business travellers. We went down for breakfast after 9 and I suspect that any earlier and it would have had quite a corporate feel to it. I am not surprised to see that the breakfast is award winning. It was jaw dropping in its scrumptiousness. There is an extensive choice including homemade bircher muesli, through to full English and fluffy blueberry pancakes with maple syrup (these got my kids vote). Random requests from my 7 year old, such as a sausage on the side with tomato ketchup were happily fulfilled by the staff! Breakfast also has the added bonus of complimentary tea, coffee and freshly squeezed juice refills. The list of highlights could get quite extensive but I need to give special mention to the Charlie and the chocolate factory inspired ‘scrumdiddlyumptious’ afternoon tea. The kids were amazed at the golden eggs and candy floss on sticks (not to mention hyper afterwards!!) but all worth it for a memory making treat to top off our trip to London.
All in all, we were thoroughly well looked after. Nothing was too much trouble for the team at One Aldwych and it was consistently excellent throughout our stay. Luxury worth every penny. I just need an excuse to go again!
