A yurt is a circular domed structure that made of lattice wood and covered with felt and canvas. Yurts are typically set on raised wooden platforms and have minimal impact on the surrounding soils. A yurt is a novelty for both adults and children, and a lovely space to be in. Portugal Yurt Retreat can accommodate a family of 4 with a queen size bed and sofa which converts to a single bed. A further single mattress can be provided should it be needed. The yurt can be rented between the summer months of June and September. It has an adjoining outdoor dining space and basic kitchen. It also has a private solar hot water shower and compost toilet. The yurt and outdoor area also has electric lighting and a power supply for charging laptops and mobile phones.
The yurt space is enclosed in order to provide a safe playing area for young children. There is also a large trampoline, sandpit and tyre swings on the grounds that any visiting children are more than welcome to play on. The owners can provide vegetarian meals and are flexible on food to accommodate children. Children's yoga classes are also available.
The yurt owners Fiona and Mark live on site with their daughter Elsie. Their aim is to live as sustainably as possible by producing the things they need from the land, reducing the need to purchase products or recycle. The holiday yurt uses both solar and hydro power for electricity. Families have the option of booking fully catered vegetarian meals for the duration of your holiday. Most of the food prepared comes from the on-site veggie garden which is produced without the use of artificial fertilisers and chemicals. If you choose to stay on a B&B basis, you can also purchase a basket of vegetables fresh from the garden. Olives are picked every year from the surrounding olive trees which is made into organic cold pressed extra virgin olive oil. The kitchen will be stocked with a range of herbal, black and green tea, and coffee making supplies. The owners can also provide a basic picnic hamper meal if you choose to have a day or evening out.
Fiona is also a qualified yoga teacher, and can offer children's and family yoga classes that can be customised to all level s of experience. Why not start your yurt holiday off on the right foot by booking a class for your family at the start of your stay?

This was one of the highlights of the trip - beautiful location, really friendly folk and a great place for our kids to hang out, run around and have fun!Elsie was a superb host to our eldest (both were aged about 4) - the 2 became instant friends which meant we had more time to chill in the hammocks! Would definitely go back and stay again!
We stayed at Portugal Yurt Retreat for five days and had the best time. Having never stayed in a yurt before and traveling with our 10 and 1 1/2 year old we were looking for something that would be fun and safe. Allowing space to connect with nature was very inportant to us as we live in central london.. Mark, Fi and Nuno provided so much care and attention. We arrived quite late and were met by Mark who took charge of ferrying our bags to the Yurt leaving us to wonder and wander down to the yurt with Nuno as guide taking in the amazing lanscape in-which we were to stay. Fi had cooked us a meal which was delicious and wholesome and although we had opted out of having our meals provided, she had remembered my wheat free needs. The espanse of sky was amazing and that we could still spy it whilst in the yurt was an amazment to our children. The yurt itself was kitted out to a very beautiful and comfortable standard. They had made sure to repeat the circularity of the yurt itself with the furniture creating a safe environment for our kids to be and play in when we weren't out and about visiting and playing out on the land or being shown around by the Mark as he gentily explained how they were living off grid and in harmony with the land. As I like to cook the kichean was important. It was well stocked with all that is needed for food prep and included rice, pasta herbs and spices cheese and some home made cookes. Oh, and a bottle of wine! I would definitely recommend this beautiful place to stay to other families wtih children with no hesitation. We plan to go back this year to worship the sun to salute it again and gorge on wild grapes!
It's not hard to find all sorts of eco yurt type holidays these days but none will compare with this. The yurt and facilities are clean and fresh yet cosy, with plenty of attention to detail. One would usually pay a lot more for this kind of experience. The food is fantastic, especially breakfast, helped by eating on the veranda overlooking the valley. We stayed last summer with our three year old who loved playing on the swings, hammocks and trampoline with Elsie. My highlight was listening to the owls from the snugness of bed, and chatting with Fiona, Mark and Nuno who never make you feel like just another customer. The surrounding area is great for river swimming and wandering around beautiful towns that impressed even my native (Portuguese) partner.
The yurt is really comfortable with a great kitchen and bathroom area attached. It's particularly lovely for city children to stay in and be able to run round freely in the fresh air. My daughter really enjoyed playing with Elsie on the trampoline and swings and it was a great change for her from London life.
