About Red Shoot Camping Park
Camping and the New Forest, a marriage made in heaven – well for us at least. Acres of ancient woodland, trees to be climbed, dens to be built, babbling brooks and dams, ‘flat’ cycle paths, singing birds, wild pigs, ponies, cows and horses roaming freely, cream teas and pints of cider - you couldn’t make it up… Red Shoot is a perfect location for all things nature, but is in close enough proximity to a whole raft of other activities.
The Campsite & The Byre
Finding the perfect camping spot to enjoy all the magical New Forest has to offer can be a bit of a head spinner - but that is where Red Shoot Camping comes in. The campsite is set a godo three miles away from the A338 and once here you could be a million miles away from anywhere. Be prepared to adjust your mindset - there's no haste, just make time to relax.
Family run for three generations the team at Red Shoot know what makes a camping holiday sing. History tells us that Jaqui has in fact spent all of her life at the site and has seen it morph into the success it is today. She and Nick have invested their time and effort in providing a retreat for frazzled families and couples and so rest-assured that the calm atmosphere will remain so - until that is the kids wake up!
Indigenous hedges separate the fields and the whole site is run with the least amount of impact on the environment as possible. Being a family-friendly site the children are welcome to wander freely exploring the park with their newly met friends or mastering their cycling skills on the paths laid out around the park. Reassuringly at Red S hoot the camping pitches are generally flat and you can request what you want or what you don’t want; don’t fancy a tree blocking your sun then just ask and the office staff will endeavour to meet your requirements. Should you prefer to have power 10 amp hook ups are available, please do request them when booking. Campervans and caravans are also welcome but please note there are no hard standing facilties.
If you have tried camping and it’s not your thing or the Grandparents would like to join you then there is The Byre available to rent – once a Dairy Parlour. The Byre has been converted and is now a very well appointed, under floor heated two bedroom cottage - the added comfort means the whole family can be together and have a holiday to remember in years to come. A baby changing mat, potty and high chair are available on request. Outside, there is a fenced patio area and a bbq with outdoor furniture with a dedicated parking space provided.
The facilities are spotlessly clean, toilets/showers are cleaned regularly throughout the day. Under floor heating keeps the chill away and 24 hour hot water means you’re never far from a good wash! Ladies get hairdryers and long mirrors and men shaver points. There is a family and a disabled wash area however, both male and female facilities have lower sinks for children to use. Just ask should you need a baby bath.
The shop is very well stocked, in fact one of the best I’ve seen, offering both essentials and luxury items. Much of the produce is locally sourced and is of exceptional quality. Fresh pastries and bread are waiting in the morning, pasties and cakes in the afternoon and all are baked fresh on site. Should the children have behaved like angels and earned their pocket money then the shop can help them spend it on cricket sets, tennis rackets and other worthy play things.
The Red Shoot pub is next to the campsite which is owned independently. A couple of times a year there are cider/beer festivals at the pub, please check dates if this is something you want to avoid
Things to Do
There is a small playground for the children to play and when it’s not too busy a field where children (and adults) can play ball games. But the real fun starts when you get into the forest which is literally just outside the campsite and through the pub car park. The forest is expansive so fabulous to explore on foot or bike, look out for the New Forest ponies, donkies, cattle and in the autumn free-roaming pigs. Keep your ears open for the bird song and eyes open for the wild life and stunning scenery.
If the children want a break from the forest then head to the award winning beaches at Poole and Bournemouth, the drive is less than 30 mins away. Just further on from Poole take the chain ferry to the Isle of Purbeck, where you will find the unspoilt beaches of Studland, on to Corfe Castle and the old market town of Wareham.
Horse-ride in Burley, visit the New Forest Wildlife Park for animal and adventure playgrounds, see the classic cars at Baeulieu, have a history lesson at Bucklers Hard, run the children ragged at Moors Valley, Marwell Zoo is a car ride away and if the children are adrenaline driven then a visit to Paultons Park will appease them. Water sports can be booked at the New Forest Water Park, day trip over to the Isle of Wight. The cities of Southampton, Winchester and Salisbury are an easy car ride away should you wish to explore further afield.
