About Retallack Resort and Spa

Retallack Resort and Spa offers 5* family friendly self catering cottages, lodges and chalets in North Cornwall. The luxury resort offers a selection of two, three, four and six bedroom houses which can be configured to be baby friendly, dog friendly or allergy friendly. The cottages with a hot tubs are very popular so be sure to book in advance. Resort facilities are many and varied and include an indoor heated pool, state of the art gym, Kids Club, tennis courts and Shipwreck Kids playground. The Green Room Restaurant with James Nathan, MasterChef winner in 2008, serves exciting food and is getting rave reviews. The FlowRider is brilliant fun in all weather and sessions include wetsuit hire and tuition to get you mastering the surf. The resort is just minutes away from the beautiful Cornish beaches including Daymer Bay, Harlyn, Watergate Bay and Constantine.

Retallack is a luxury five star self-catering resort in Cornwall. The specification for the self-catering lodges - thanks to Amy's exacting standards - is extremely high. Things like good pans, plenty of cutlery, crockery and glasses, a dishwasher to pop it all in, big towels, cosy bathrobes, nice smelling toiletries (it's the important things in life), plentiful en-suites and baths big enough for the three kids and loads of space. So much space in fact that the girls had their own floor - pretty darned decadent!

My initial disappointment as the lodge wasn't ready was over-ridden as soon as we walked in - it was spotlessly clean, extremely well-appointed, incredibly spacious and comfortable - the girls disappeared upstairs immediately to explore. They quickly sorted out their bedrooms whilst I checked the kitchen cupboards - after putting on the kettle and making a start on the biscuits - all equipment available and ready to hand for the most complicated of menus - the only issue is with The Green Room on site - James Nathan's restaurant - and the delicious smells omitted from his kitchen it would somehow be churlish to try too hard in the kitchen! At least for this non-domestic Goddess anyway!

So Accommodation...

You have a vast choice - from two bedroom lodges to six bedroom houses. A further option is a hot tub or not - a real treat though the pool and hot tub available in the Flow Rider area placates those that don't. Each lodge offers the same high spec furnishings and finishes - granite worktops, oak floors, powerful showers, constant hot water (!), good quality bed linen and cosy big sofas to all crash on together and watch some tv for which there are plenty of channels!

Retallack have made a fab step towards recognising the needs of young families. The specifically child-friendly accommodation is perfect for those with babies and toddlers - stair gates, high chairs, cutlery and crockery, plug socket protectors and potties are all available in your lodge. Comfort and fully equipped throughout is standard. Families with twins are in abundance here at the moment - they are clearly well catered for too.

The reception block houses the Lounge area, the swimming pool, spa and Flow-Rider. The Lounge is pared back contemporary chic with a seaside theme - it's lovely and it's a good place to crash out and socialise with other families, whilst the little ones chill out on the huge bean bags in the games alcove or else enjoy the baby/toddler toys around. Coffee is very good, the brownies are to die for, food at either lunch or dinner is prepared expediently and without fuss for the little ones - it's really good too; Aggie's spag bol was the best Robert has tasted!

Resort facilities include an indoor heated pool, state of the art gym, spin studio, Kids Club, Teen Club in school holidays, tennis courts, short approach golf and Shipwreck Kids playground. The Flow-Rider is a must - admittedly I had reservations about looking a complete ninny - particularly as I was up against the girls (yes I do feel a little competitive) - but it was such an adrenaline rush and amazingly good fun for us all - even for Aggie, 5 who looked terrified but who was so well looked after by Sam, and Lottie, 9, who gave it a shot and was hilarious flying to the back of the waves! The calm tutelage of Sam got us as far as standing - I haven't felt so proud since giving birth to Aggie! Eve and I booked in for another session - testament to the fun to be had!

The kids club is in a lodge all of it's own and offers sessions twice a day throughout the main holidays (Teens are also catered for during school hols) - both Lottie and Aggie really enjoyed their time which is an achievement considering the age gap - and they left with some fabulous creations, Lottie's purple elephant took over our car! The club is well-equipped, very clean, has smiley people looking after the kids and looks a nice place to be - always a comfort. Staff are trained and vetted. An outdoor area is being constructed at the moment which should open it out for more Cornish sunny days beautifully.

Retallack is a Resort in development - it's not a full-on place to be as many resorts can be - you may choose to be as active or inactive as you wish; organised activities are mainly fitness / pool based. A car is a must. You shall need to either order your groceries on-line before you arrive, or explore the local towns / farm shops to get supplies. We spent time just being at Retallack, having a stroll up to the outdoor play park - a perfect meeting place for the kids - or around the fishing lakes, enjoying the ducks from the nearby pond coming for breakfast - and supper, playing in the pool, meeting up with new friends, chilling out and simply being a family - life as fast paced as it is doesn't always allow for doing nothing together!

The resorts location in North Cornwall is a short drive from the beautiful Cornish beaches including Daymer Bay, Harlyn, Watergate Bay and Constantine. The beaches are excellent for sandcastle building, rock pooling, paddling and/or, of course, surfing. There are lots of little towns to explore, lots of outdoor activities to get stuck into and lots of other restaurants around including those belonging to big name chefs, such as Rick Stein and Jamie's Fifteen, close by.
