About Sheen Falls Lodge

We all know that Ireland is a beautiful country, and the Sheen Falls Lodge has one of the country’s most beautiful locations. Situated near to the scenic Ring of Kerry and surrounded by purple-heathered mountains and cascading waterfalls, the Sheen Falls Lodge is luxury accommodation in 300 acres of unique, magical woodlands on a private stretch of the Sheen River, perfect for inquisitive children to explore. This stunning privately-owned country house combines 5 star luxury with that famous traditional warm Irish welcome.

Although within easy reach of three major airports of Shannon, Cork and Kerry, five minutes from the brightly coloured village of Kenmare and only 30 minutes from the vibrant town of Killarney, The Sheen Falls Lodge feels like a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Its beautiful environment means it's a place to relax and switch off, knowing your every whim will be catered for! Whether you want to chill out in the hotel's restaurants or indulge in the spa treatments on offer; or if you're more active and feel like salmon fishing on a private stretch of the Sheen River, clay pigeon shooting, horse riding or walking and cycling in the 300 acres of woodland, Sheen Falls Lodge has everything covered.

Clare, Paul, Ruby and Ted visited:

The approach to Sheen Falls Lodge is a fabulous drive (unfortunately for us through horizontal rain!) through Killarney National Park, very reminiscent of the English Lake District. This is definitely the Emerald part of the Isle and it looks like Fairy and Leprechaun country round here! The location of Sheen Falls Lodge is pretty impressive too - it overlooks a beautiful tidal bay, surrounded by the McGillicuddy Reeks mountains and has a river with its own waterfall running through it. We were greeted by the friendly concierge who helped us in with our bags. Inside this lovely country house hotel you're welcomed by squashy sofas and a roaring fire (you've got to love August in Ireland!) and lovely warm traditional décor.

We were shown up to our huge suite which won the award for biggest bed of the week for mum and dad and two pull-down beds for the kids. The room had incredible views over the bay and out to the mountains - really picturesque - and was laid out with a complimentary bowl of fruit and robes and slippers for all. The kids were desperate to get into the swimming pool so I took them to the leisure centre whilst dad went salmon fishing on the river (just one of the many activities on offer at the hotel).

The spa has lots of treatments available, but we headed straight for the clover-shaped pool. The leisure centre has limited swim times for kids and soon it was filled with children of all ages. Sheen Falls also houses self-catering villas which are a popular and flexible choice for families, and Ruby and Ted soon made friends splashing around in the pool. As my kids are 8 and 10 I felt confident to leave them for 10 minutes while I popped round the corner for a soak in the largest Jacuzzi I've ever seen, then returned to relax by the poolside on one of the loungers dotted by the pool.

When we emerged from the leisure centre the weather had picked up considerably so we went for a walk around the gardens, marvelling at the waterfall and catching up with dad further up the Sheen river. The salmon were jumping tantalisingly close but unfortunately weren't biting that afternoon! The kids were starving after their swim so instead of waiting to eat at the restaurant at the hotel we ate by the river, having bought supplies earlier in the day for a lunchtime picnic along the way which had been thwarted by the rain. The late afternoon sun sparkled on the river whilst those pesky fish kept jumping, providing quite an idyllic setting for our impromptu picnic!

Ruby and I went back to the room to freshen up whilst the boys carried on fishing. After we'd left they spotted a kingfisher on the riverbank, but unfortunately came home without a fish. Meanwhile Ruby immersed herself in a huge deep bubble bath - the fabulously luxurious bathroom even had a special ‘bubble-frother' tap to make your ablutions really foamy!

Later on we headed downstairs to the tremendous library, stocked with books on every subject you could think of! There's a section all to itself for children's books, stocked with loads of titles from Harry Potter to Peppa Pig picture books for the little ones. We chose Scrabble from the selection of board games and had a quick game before retiring to our room with a DVD selected from the hotel's extensive library.

Breakfast was a lavish affair in the sunny grand dining room overlooking the falls, with a delicious selection from the buffet - fresh fruit and juices, cereals, nut and seeds, and home-made pastries - followed by a hot choice from the breakfast menu. Dad had the full Irish, I had a haddock and Gruyere omelette and the children had French Toast with berries and maple syrup - yum. We were all a bit too full for our planned game of tennis so we went into the local village of Kenmare instead for a walk around the colourful town.

Sheen Falls Lodge offers magnificent, traditional 5-star stays for the family in beautiful Kerry countryside. The Ring of Beara is on your doorstep and the more famous Ring of Kerry is only a short drive away. The welcome is warm and friendly whether you're staying in the main hotel or in the self-catering villas - definitely worth a visit!
