Nicola visited with her family:
If you are looking for a spot of old school glamour then look no further than Stapleford Park Country House Hotel. This beautiful stately home situated in 500 acres of Capability Brown landscaped gardens is just the ticket for a weekend retreat with a touch of luxury.
You immediately feel relaxed as soon as you set foot in the very grand reception with its roaring fire and welcome hosts. We were made very welcome by the duty manager Annette who showed us to our large double room with stunning views of the grounds.
As our son is still fairly young we chose to go for an extra child's bed in the bedroom as opposed to interconnecting rooms but there was still plenty of space along with lots of nice touches - a welcome pack for Sebastian, as well as his own mini fluffy dressing gown, along with complimentary sloe gin for Mum and Dad, magazines, gowns and fruit.
We arrived just after lunch and had booked a falconry session so had to drag ourselves away from our relaxing room to meet Peter who attentively cares for the birds of prey at Stapleford. Peter clearly loves his work and this comes over in the attention and time he spends with the guests. He looks after his feathered friends extremely well. We all got the chance to hold Bernard the owl who was huge !!
Afterwards we headed back inside for a spot of high tea in the beautiful library bar before heading out to explore the rest of the grounds. The estate offers a wide range of country pursuits and leisure activities such as shooting, and riding as well as boasting a 18 hole championship golf course.
We were just content to head out in our wellies (spare ones are always at hand near the front door) and take in the crisp winter afternoon strolling though the lovely gardens. The outdoor chess and boules were a hit with our six year old as was climbing the many trees in the garden. Just the ticket for walking off all that cake!
The hotel also offers the Clarins Gold spa which offers an array of relaxing treatments. There are even complimentary fitness classes such as yoga or spinning. What's more if you fancy an afternoon of pampering without the little ones there is a superb crèche on-site where fully qualified nannies will look after the children for just £10.00 an hour.
However the lure of the pool was calling so we headed off to the swimming pool complex within the house with its fabulous heated 22m pool, steam room, sauna and Jacuzzi. We met another young family who were also enjoying a break at Stapleford. They were travelling with a baby and had been delighted with the welcome they had received - a beautifully made up cot, along with a complimentary ‘jelly cat' soft toy for baby.
After an hour or so splashing around we headed back to the room to get ready for dinner. As most parents will tell you this is often the most stressful time when staying in a somewhat salubrious hotel with young children. I was a little worried as I knew Caroline (one of the lovely hosts) had booked us into the main dining room, preceded by drinks in the library bar. Still it was a good excuse to sample the sloe gin (to steady our nerves of course!)
We needn't have worried - maybe the relaxed atmosphere of the house had a positive effect on our son? But it was a very relaxed affair. We were made very welcome in the library bar where we all enjoyed a pre-dinner drink. It was such a treat to relax on the lovely sofas surrounded by this elegant décor and enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif whilst Sebastian was fussed over by all of the staff. A nice touch was being able to chose from the menu in the bar, and then being escorted to our table in the very grand dining room.
On the menu there were plenty of choices for children and they are made to feel very welcome in the dining room. Service does start at 6pm as well so if you do want an early supper that's no problem either. What's more he food was simply excellent.
Afterwards full of good wine and food we headed back to the room and slept like babies in the huge bed!
The nest morning we were treated to a delicious breakfast with a huge choice - pancakes, eggs Benedict, full English or continental. You name it they had it!
We were made to feel so welcome at the hotel. They take care of small details and really do go out of their way to make you feel at home. Despite being this very ‘grand' building you immediately feel at home. It is the perfect place to relax, yet if you are seeking a more activity based break there is so much to do for families.
The hotel is a short drive from Rutland Water with its many activities, walks, delightful villages and superb pubs. Belvoir Castle, Burghley House are not far away and you are also close to Twin Lakes theme park -specially designed for little ones.
To be honest though we loved Stapleford so much we couldn't drag ourselves away.
