Review of The Balmoral Edinburgh by Helen, Joel (8) and Layla (5)

We stayed at The Balmoral as part of our trip round the UK visiting ....in the kids' words ....England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales.

It is a genuine 5 star stay but really does welcome children - which is part of the Rocco Forte brand experience. Service is everything you'd expect and I enjoyed the feeling of being at the heart of Scotland.

We arrived on Halloween for a Sunday night stay at around 1pm. We were far too early to check-in to our room but nothing was too much trouble and we were immediately given a kid-focused tour of all the public areas of the hotel which passed quite a bit of time. Despite being quite the seasoned travellers, the kids were totally taken with the grandeur and history of the place and there were lots of ‘oooohs' and ‘aaahs' as we explored.

Accommodation

After indulging in a Halloween themed afternoon tea in the Balmoral Bar (eye popping, blood oozing cakes) we were glad to discover our huge family room. It was totally geared up to welcome children with mini bathrobes and slippers and plenty of DVD's on tap - not that we had time to watch them. Mum wasn't left out - there was a supply of REN goodies for me in the bathroom which included my favourite Ren grapefruit shower gel.

Food

We spent the evening in Hadrian's restaurant, again very warm welcome for the children (not sure what it would be like on a Friday or Saturday if it was busy) but we had plenty of attention from our waiter. There was a set kids menu of 2 courses with a choice homemade burgers, fish cakes and chicken goujons for main course, which seemed very unadventurous but tasted wholesome and delicious - clean plates all round!

Breakfast the next morning was in a league of its own - eaten in the same Hadrian's restaurant there was a vast array of options for the kids including homemade blueberry pancakes and huge waffles with maple syrup. We thought we'd died and gone to heaven!

Check-in was smooth, check out was seamless - Steven from Concierge even carried our bags to the station and helped us to the train - truly impeccable service. But I left with the feeling that they wouldn't have had it any other way. We will definitely be going back!

To Do

Both kids received age appropriate fact sheets telling them all the best sights to visit in Edinburgh. It felt really comforting to know that all the sights and shops were literally on our doorstep. There is so much to do in Edinburgh within walking distance; we really struggled to fit everything in.

The kids were happy to spend most of the time in the pool. I like the way there are set times for kids to access the spa facilities - weekdays after 10am and a morning session and evening (5-8) on weekends. That way it felt okay for them to really have fun and make a noise, splashing around without needing to reign in their excitement for fear of disturbing other guests. For a city centre hotel the pool is really enormous, so worth a dip.

Local attractions include the stunning Edinburgh Castle, The Royal Mile, The Palace of Holyroodhouse, Arthur's Seat, Murrayfield National Rugby Stadium and Glenkinchie Famous Lowland Malt Whisky Distillery, National Gallery, Omni Centre.

It's all so accessible - enjoy!
