The stunning countryside is the perfect backdrop to partaking in one of the many on-site activities on offer, from shooting to Segway safaris. It is a delightful base to explore all the glories of the nearby Cotswolds attractions.
We arrived at the reception after having marveled at the beautiful drive through the expansive estate with the dusky evening light casting a serene glow across the Vale of Evesham; it certainly was a lovely spot. We were allocated a room in the stable block which was in a separate building to the main lodge, so we re-parked down the hill for ease of transporting our belongings. Once settled in our room we sank into the sumptuous beds scattered with cosy texured cushions and blankets; all set against a soothing, neutral colour palette with a nod to Scandinavian design. The inviting window seat offered picturesque views across the countryside and a fantastic spot to relax by. The room was kitted out with a tea tin, kettle, waffle bathrobes and Orla Kiely toiletries. Each room at the hotel is canine-friendly, so families can bring their beloved pet with them for their stay.
Accommodation for Families
Much of the hotels accommodation is in refurbished farm buildings a short walk from the main lodge, with connecting paths woven across the hillside. Whether you stay in the Farmhouse, The Outhouse or The Stables, you're assured modern, Scandi-style rustic comfort in all of the room options, from the Shaker pegs to the tea tin cadies. The Farmhouse is fantastic for extended families wanting to share a weekend break together; its nine rooms are also ideal for booking as a unit for a group.
The child friendly restaurant
Our meal in the hotel’s restaurant was extremely delicious in a stylish but unpretentious setting. You feel like you’ve been invited round to your wealthy relative’s house to dine with friends. The staff were professional, friendly and enthusiastic with their smart but casual uniform adding to the cosy and relaxed ambience. The starters wouldn’t have looked out of place on a fancy Michelin star restaurant and tasted heavenly. My main course was a vegetarian option - risotto with mint, asparagus and feta. The smell was divine and was so tasty that needless to say there were clean plates all round. Children also have a good choice from their own dedicated menu including firm family favourites. The breakfast buffet was also excellent.
Looking around the Lodge at the exquisite lounge areas you would never know that until recently, this hotel was a conference center. It has a dedicated games room with billiard table, table football, PlayStation and is a great place to kick back and chill out on a beanbag while watching a film. The bar next door is handy for parents to keep watchful eye on the children whilst being able to relax with a glass of wine or local brew. The bar area is also pooch friendly should you wish not be parted with your four legged friend.
With 400 acres of spectacular private estate countryside on the doorstep, there is a host of activities to try; from clay-pigeon shooting to Segway safaris. To take part children have to be 8 or over. As well as the Segway safari, families can book a tour of the estate by quad bike. It is a thrilling way to explore off-road and the grounds are worth exploring, with meadows, woodland and views over the Vale of Evesham. If you’ve always fancied yourself as a Robin Hood or a Maid Marion then take your aim at archery, with expert tuition from highly skilled bowmen. This certainly ticks the box for families wanting a relaxing yet energetic break.
Location and things to do
Encircled by the spectacular Farncombe Estate near Broadway village in the northern Cotswolds you may not wish to venture far due to the numerous on-site activities. However the kids will appreciate a trip to nearby Cotsolds Wildlife Park and Gardens in Burford, where they can see animals galore, explore the Tropical House, be mesmerised by the penguins or catch a ride on the train. If you have little ones who like animals then Adam Henson's Cotswold Farm Park is a popular choice near Cheltenham. From bouncy pillows to peaceful corners with views of the Cotswolds countryside, the Farm Park has something for all ages. About 10 miles is Sudeley Castle. Built in the 15th Century it is a great visitor attraction and a fantastic day out in the Cotswolds for children to enjoy.
