West Runton Campsite is in a gorgeous location being ideally situated within striking distance of the coast yet seemingly sheltered within the heart of mature woodland. It is accessed via a gradual ascent down a winding road though the forest. As we arrived the road was a bit slippery and muddy due to a recent shower so if towing a caravan you may need to take it slowly. All pitches are on a slight slope.
The Camping and Caravanning Club recognises how important it is for campers especially with children to find clean amenity blocks with a high standard of fixtures and fittings and at West Runton the shower blocks are outstanding. Spotlessly clean they were spacious and well maintained with a tropical plant centre-piece added to the pleasant surroundings. The showers were spacious and roomy. And there was also the extra parent and baby room AND a family shower room. Attached to the shower block was a laundry room - just in case you need to do an emergency wash load! Your pitch will be available after noon on your arrival day and you will need to vacate it before noon on your last days stay.
The children's outdoor playground is located to the side away from any pitches. With swings and a small sandpit it will keep little ones entertained whilst parents need a breather or while tea is being prepared. There is also a communal barn and barbecue area which is a handy respite if the weather is wet - activities arranged in high season. Also available are two boules courts. The well stocked handy on-site shop sells local fresh produce. A handy fish and chip service is available every Wednesday and Saturday night which is good to know if you want to have a break from cooking - well you are on holiday!
Things to do with Kids and Family Days Out in Norfolk
From a latched gate at the bottom of this campsite you discover a bridleway. Just a 20 minute walk directly from this site along this bridleway will bring you to the beautiful coastline of North Norfolk; either to West Runton or East Runton. The beach at West Runton is accessible from the clifftop car park. It is ideal for swimming and exploring rock pools. Both West and East Runton are quaint Norfolk fishing villages. The seaside towns of Sheringham and Cromer have many attractions suitable for the family. Each has a carnival week during the summer.
The North Norfolk Railway line is known as the Poppy Line, because of the flowers lining the track in summer. Sheringham Park is famous for its rhododendrons and azaleas. Cromer Museum contains the remains of Britain's oldest fossil - the West Runton Elephant - and the cast of the skull of the giant Mosasaur reptile.
Climb the Beacon, the highest point on the coast, for excellent views inland and to sea. Holkham Hall is home to the Earl and Countess of Leicester, who also own the local beach and nature reserve. Felbrigg Hall is a 17th century house with park, walled garden, dovecote and orangery. The Muckleburgh Collection is the UK's largest privately-owned, working military museum. It includes exhibitions on air sea rescue and local regiments.
