Windermere Family Camping & Caravanning Holidays, Cumbria

Ashes Lane, Staveley, Kendal, Cumbria

We are delighted to offer 50 family and child friendly campsites - specifically selected for us by the Camping and Caravanning Club. This one based in Windermere in the Lake District is open from 14th March 2011 - 14th January 2012.

Our family camping experts - Paul & Vicky McNally visited with Beck(8) and Sadie(5) in tow:

The Windermere Caravan and Camping site is very easily found, but still tucked away enough to benefit from its rural setting. The staff are efficient and friendly, John who has just moved down from Scotland even sites our folding camper to spare me the embarrassment of several failed reversing attempts.

It's a huge site with a playground for the kids, smart stone walls and well kept lawns. The handy well stocked shop sold freshly-baked morning rolls and locally-reared bacon. The Camping and Caravanning Club is renowned for its superb shower and toilet facilities and Windermere certainly was pristine and well heated which was a pleasant surprise. It also housed a parent and baby room AND a mother and baby room. Just in case we ran out of clean attire there was an on-site laundrette perfect for families camping with young kids.

We spotted the occasional rabbit and a cock pheasant with his harem of hens parading around the site. There's even an on-site traditional pub, "The Whistling Pig" open most days from 6:00 to 10:30p.m. serving food and a selection of fine ales (children are not allowed in the bar area, however there is an adjoining family room). This would be the easy and pleasant option when you get back to your pitch after a full days touring.

The village of Stavely is within walking distance and Windemere is only 5 miles away. We spent the evening walking around stunning Bowness and took a boat out on Lake Windemere for an hour before treating ourselves to fish and chips followed by ice creams.

Things to do with Kids and Family Days Out in Windermere

The first port of call for any family touring the Lake District should be the Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole Windermere where you will get inundated with ideas of things to do with the kids during your stay. It also has a fantastic play area for children, a climbing wall and a family friendly restaurant overlooking the lake.

Kendal is close by with good restaurants and shopping facilities. It is also home to the Abbot Hall Art Gallery, the Museum of Lakeland Life and the Kendal Museum. The town of Bowness-on-Windermere has the World of Beatrix Potter attraction and the Lake District Visitor Centre. Take the car ferry from Bowness to the western Lakes.
