The RSPB say about their Portmore Lough reserve:
"If you enjoy walking and wildlife, Portmore Lough is a great day out at any time of year. During the summer the traditional hay meadows alongside the lough attract a bewildering variety of butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies, while in the winter greylag geese, whooper swans and thousands of ducks can be seen from the hide on the lough edge. If you’re coming in winter, we recommend wearing strong boots.
The wide expanse of Portmore Lough Reserve makes it a great place for families to explore. Ask the Warden for the loan of binoculars or pond dipping nets. The picnic area and toilets make Portmore Lough Reserve an ideal stopping off point. In summer, why not drop in for a barbeque? The warden is happy to organise a guided walk or pond dipping activity for parties of eight or more. Fancy a ‘wild’ children’s party? We can set aside the shelter and picnic tables for your own food and provide up to an hour and a half of supervised activities. Contact the Warden well in advance to discuss availability."
There is a lovely trail to go on, very muddy and bringing your wellies is a MUST...
