The Away with the Kids review

Family Break at London Hilton Park Lane

My family visited London Hilton on Park Lane with my two teenage daughters and their Grandma for a birthday celebration weekend. We had planned a girlie weekend away with shopping, a trip to the West End and to take in all the sights and sounds of the Capital with a spot of pampering thrown in for good measure. We checked in at the lobby, slightly earlier than planned so our room was not quite ready but as we were staying on the executive floors we were able to relax with a refreshing drink and nibbles in the executive lounge. Once our suite had been prepared, we were contacted via mobile phone and the keys were promptly hand delivered to us in the lounge.

Family Interconnecting Rooms and Suites

Our suite was on the 25th floor and with a super smooth ride up in the lift, adjusting to our ears popping, we were excited to see what lay behind our room door. The room was stunningly spacious with elegant interiors and views to make you gasp. Through the lobby, you walked into the lounge with comfy L-shaped sofas and a large flat screen TV, mini bar and tea making facilities. The hallway to the right leads you to a plush bathroom suite with roomy power shower, his and hers sink, voluminous bath, toilet, bidet and decked out with numerous toiletries. It featured a Japanese style panel window which could be opened out onto the master bedroom. Opposite the bathroom was a large walk in wardrobe with plush towelling robes and through to the main bedroom, again featured those captivating views. The girls room was an adjacent interconnecting room and they were lucky enough to overlook Buckingham Palace with views out to Big Ben and beyond. The girls both squealed with delight when they realised they were welcomed with an age appropriate goody bag; all had been meticulously arranged on booking.

Once we had got our bearings, we hopped on a bus with a stop just outside the hotel and enjoyed the hustle and bustle of the capital from the top deck while we viewed Marble Arch and ventured down Oxford Circus stopping at Bond Street with a mooch down South Moulton Street. Time flew, so we quickly headed back to the hotel to freshen up. There waiting for us in our room was a lovely surprise for the birthday girl; a personalised cake along with a spectacular display of mouth-watering tasty treats. It was the perfect spread for anyone with a sweet tooth, complimented with a huge bowl of fresh fruit. We quickly devoured the macaroons and exquisite mini cakes, savouring every last crumb, before heading off to the West End. We had previously booked tickets to see Matilda, and managed to squeeze in a quick pit stop for a light snack in the heart of theatre land.

Retiring for the night back at the hotel, from the huge window seat, I found it mesmerising just watching the traffic far down below, seemingly in a silent eternal procession. It certainly felt a different world within the quiet calm haven of the suite to the bustling bright lights of a city that never sleeps.

Podium Restaurant

Our night was very restful in the super comfortable beds and everyone felt revitalised and ready for the next day’s adventures. One of the highlights of our trip was the superb choice and tasty food on offer at the open buffet breakfast in the Podium restaurant on the ground floor. The staff were extremely accommodating with the eccentric requests my girls decided to ask for such as a hazelnut shot cappuccino and iced coffee. The birthday girl requested a freshly made waffle and she duly topped it with all the sugary treats she could find. My health fanatic other daughter was equally impressed with the wide choice of fruit juices such as Rhubarb juice with zinc and vitamin C and Kiwi, Spinach, Cucumber and Lime super smoothie. I really enjoyed the creamy scrambled eggs and the sausages were just divine. To top it all off we discovered the gluten free range of muffins, which tasted as good as they looked.

Hotel looking across Hyde Park

After re-fuelling at breakfast, we decided to have a quick saunter around Hyde Park and discovered there was a superb vantage point at Serpentine Bar & Kitchen, with an outdoor terrace that looks out over famous Serpentine Lake. There were lots of people enjoying the fresh air, many out for a run, cycling or having a roller-skating lesson. You can also hire paddle boats on the Serpentine. There are bike stations dotted about Hyde Park run by Santander cycling. You initially pay £2 and the first 30 minutes was free then for every following half an hour a further £2 charge is incurred. When you are finished, you can return the bike to any docking station. There is even one conveniently located outside the hotel. Hyde Park is one of our favourite haunts as we have enjoyed a sunny day with the kids spent splashing and paddling in the Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain.

Pampering and fitness facilities

The girls had been booked in the Spa for a mini manicure which was a serenely calming oasis located in the basement of the hotel. While the girls were being pampered I checked out the well-equipped fitness gym. There was no time to fit in a visit to the sauna and steam room, but it was useful to know that the hotel provided this facility, to help relax those aching limbs and ease the tension that builds up when travelling around the capital.

We also whizzed up to the top 28th floor of the hotel where we sneaked a peak at the fabulous Michelin-starred dining at Galvin. It certainly was an awesome view and can imagine all the better lit up at night.

Hotel close to Buckingham Palace

We checked out and left our bags with the concierge. As we were located so close to Buckingham Palace we decided to see if the Queen was in. It was just a 15-minute gentle walk up Constitution Hill and in no time, we were there to witness the spectacular Changing of the Guard. This only occurs on certain dates at specific times so please make sure you check beforehand. After further visits to Big Ben and Covent Garden our time had run out before needing to get back to the hotel and retrieve our bags.

Family Friendly Hotel in London's exclusive Mayfair District

The Hilton London on Park Lane was a luxurious and relaxing base for discovering the city’s culture and heritage. Every aspect of our family stay was of the highest quality and the views over the City of London from the upper floors were simply spectacular. The hotel certainly enhanced our London weekend getaway perfectly and the staff were attentive and engaging with my children. We enjoyed being in the heart of the capital as the excellent location and transport links meant we were able to visit Hyde Park, Buckingham Palace and travel to the city’s shops, theatres and attractions with ease. We hope to be lucky enough to return soon.
