About Swinton Bivouac
Swinton Bivouac at Druid's Temple site is a picturesque spot on the Swinton Estate - one of the most beautiful settings in the Yorkshire Dales. The woodland is spread over the hilltop and is not only home to six gorgeous rustic Tree Lodges, seven Yurts and the Loft, but also Druid’s Temple, a local historical site and impressive folly constructed during the late 1800s. As you stroll round the woodland there is a plethora of breath taking views looking out over the moorland and valley below.
The Away with the Kids review
Joel's Opinion - aged 9:
I stayed in one of the Tree Lodges. From the outside when we walked up to it it just looked beautiful. But when we got inside, wow, a buzz of excitement ran down my back as I knew I was going to love it. Me and my sister loved it on the top bed we all played card games and that sort of thing up there because there is a big empty space. A downside to the wooden Tree Lodges are that if you had a child under the age of five or four you would probably have to stay in a yurt. This is because the top bed is so high up so your younger child will have to be supervised. Also if you are scared of the dark make sure you bring lots of torches and lanterns because the candles don't give off that much light and there is no electricity.
I often go to Scotland with my dad in the middle of nowhere so I really love the sound of nature. So at The Bivouac you can just go onto the veranda on the rocking chair and then if you stay still, all you can hear is the wind, the swaying of the trees and some sheep. I hope we can go there again.
A short walk down the hill, the old farm buildings of High Knowle Farm have been converted into the reception, shop, camping barn and cafe providing a community area for all visitors to come and go as they please. Just a stone’s throw away, scattered around the adjacent meadow, the Yurts can be found looking out across the valley to the idyllic hamlet of Ilton.
Tree Lodge facts: Sleeps 7 people (1 king size double, 1 double & 3 singles), a range and gas hob for cooking, hot water heated by wood burner, bed linen provided, no electricity so bring torches!

For larger groups looking to stay together, or avid walkers looking for a cosy overnight stop while passing through on the Ripon Rowel, the Loft offers the perfect place to rest after a long day discovering the charms of the Yorkshire Dales. The barn houses twelve bunk beds and each one has its own bedside lamp, lockable storage box and bed linen. There is a sink, kettle, drinks preparation area and cold store. If you require towels during your stay you can hire these from the reception team.
Whether you want to book the whole room out for a large party or just a bed for the night this centrally heated barn is ideal for guests who are looking for flexible and communal accommodation. Children are welcome to stay in the bunk barn, however if you have little ones aged between 0-3 years please note that the bunk barn must be booked out exclusively.
