The Away with the Kids review

The Holiday Accommodation

Walled Garden Cottage has recently undergone complete refurbishment and renovation work, which has been lovingly restored to provide a wonderful retreat for families. The light and spacious open plan sitting rooms/kitchen overlooks the beautiful, walled garden with views across the adjacent lush green farmland. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you could possibly need for your break including a dishwasher, microwave, washing machine and a tumble dryer. The comfy sofas entice the whole family to curl up and relax after a day exploring the surrounding countryside. The cottage is equipped with under-floor heating, a wood burning stove and homely furnishings which can be enjoyed at any time of the year. The 3 bedrooms are all on the ground floor and include one double and two twins. There are two bathrooms, one with bath/shower and the other with shower. There is a handy additional attic bedroom off the double bedroom, under the eaves accessed via some "quirky" stairs. Although not sutiable for toddlers and young children it is a great space for a playroom/den for older children.

Child friendly kit and caboodle

The owners of Walled Garden Cottage have thoughtfully furnished this holiday home with young families at the forefront. There is a cot and highchair for use together with bath toys, bath mat, potty, a baby changing mat and also handily a pram, to cut down on your holiday packing. Conveniently Tesco direct deliver to the house if you want to order your food shopping online to avoid that initial frantic dash out to stock up on basics. Stocked in the kitchen there is child friendly crockery and cutlery.  There is a stash of age appropriated children’s books and DVD’s to fill a spare moment while tea is being prepared and also family favourite board games.

The Grounds and Gardens

A truly idyllic south facing setting is set within the shelter of the 18 foot high walls of the former kitchen garden to Brougham Hall (visible across the fields) with green fields in front. You may even see a red squirrel or two in the surrounding trees. The front lawn is very spacious and secluded being completely fenced from the surrounding fields and the nearest road is a few hundred metres away. The rear garden is completely enclosed too providing a safe environment for little ones to run off steam. The river Lowther runs below the back garden although it is completely fenced off from the property.

Location and things to do

Brougham is a quaint hamlet, steeped in history with its own 13th century Castle and church, on the edge of the market Town of Penrith. You are conveniently located 5 minutes from M6 (J40) and Penrith town and station is also a 5 minute drive. In Penrith there is a leisure centre with a kids swimming pool. Nearby Rhegged centre is a haven for shopping and grabbing a bite to eat as there is a fabulous outdoor kids playground and always showcases interesting exhibitions. Lowther Park and Castle is another fabulous visit with its newly built The Lost Castle - a huge wooden adventure playground set with the grounds. Pooley Bridge offers many traditional inns serving good food and delightful views across to Ullswater and the surrounding fells and mountains, and departing from the village is the Ullswater Steamers, which take you down the lake to the villages of Glenridding and Howtown.
