Peacefully located away from the crowds yet still within easy reach of Keswick, this 17th century farmhouse provides a cosy all year round bolthole for a family break
Gill Head Farm is a working farm in the lovely rural Northern Lake District that’s been run by the same family for several generations and is conveniently accessible from the A66. This lovely stone built Farmhouse can sleep a large family of ten with each of the four bedrooms has its own en-suite, cosy lounges with woodburners and plenty of character. There is also a ground floor self catering apartment available adjacent to the farmhouse ideal for grandparents wanting their own space. Situated in the peaceful countryside location, near the hamlet of Troutbeck and just a ten minute drive from the shores of Ullswater, set against a spectacular backdrop of Blencathra, provides a stunning base where you can unwind and enjoy your holiday. There is a children’s play area with swings, slides, climbing frames and 2 trampolines. Gill Head farm also operates a caravan and camping site on the grounds but set away from the Farmhouse.
The farmhouse sits proudly in prime position at the end of the private road that takes you to Gill Head Farm. The Farm is easily accessible being minutes from the A66 and with good road links to take you into the popular resorts of the Lake District means Gill Farm provides you with a great base to explore Northern Lake District. You have plenty of parking spaces next to the property so transfer of bags is easy and check in is at reception next to the farmhouse where there is a small seasonal shop with basics provisions, fresh milk, eggs, bread etc are available. The Farm is a working hill farm which means around spring time there will be plenty of new born lambs and calves for children to view.
The Holiday Accommodation
The traditional stone built farmhouse is packed to the rafters with charm and character. Delightfully decorated it boasts all the comforts and mod cons for that ideal family break and can accommodate up to 10. The farmhouse features a spacious oak beamed sitting room and warming wood burning stove, a modern, well equipped compact kitchen, a 'snug' room also with a woodburing stove, a large dining room, and four beautiful bedrooms, all with delightful en-suite facilities. In one of the bedrooms an additional single sofa bed can be utilized. Please note for little ones there are no toilet facilities on the ground floor. Outside there is a mature garden ideal for sitting out after a long day enjoying the beauty of the lakes and fells. A starter pack is included to light those initial fires but additional wood is available at a small charge purchased via an honesty box.
Little Beck is a delightful cottage style ground floor holiday apartment, adjacent to the farmhouse. Sleeping 2 it is perfect bolthole for the grandparents to stay and enjoy the grandkids on holiday but having that luxury of own space when needed.
A big hit with the children will be the fantastic play area just behind the cottage located in the camping area with swings, slides, climbing frames and 2 trampolines. Although there is no washing machine within the farmhouse if you do get stuck there is a laundrette facility charged at £1.50 a time.
The owner Amanda lives on site with her young family and so can advise the best places to visit and the nearest family eateries. Amanda also has a wealth of knowledge should you wish to arrange extra activities such as canoeing, horse riding and bushcraft courses, she would be happy to help. Should you require freshly prepared breakfast rolls, porridge and croissants then you can pre-order them at the shop.
There is a beck 100 yards away from the cottages which parents need to be aware of. Although paddling and dam building can provide hours of entertainment with children, as with all activities near water, parental supervision is advised at all times.
Location and things to do
Gill Head Farm is surrounded by some of the best walking country in the Lake District. For the more experienced walker you can partake in a strenuous hike up Blencathra or should you wish a more gentle meander then try a walk to Aira Force waterfall in Ullswater with plenty of picnic spots. Lake Ullswater is only 5 miles away and the nearest town is the traditional market town of Keswick sitting on the shores of Derwent Water takes 15 minutes by car. Enjoy the breathtaking scenery aboard one of the Ullswater “Steamers” operating between Glenridding and Pooley Bridge. The popular resorts of Grasmere, Ambleside and Windermere are each within a short scenic drive.
Rookin House Farm Outdoor Activity Centre offers a wide range of activities - such as quad-bikes, pony trekking, archery and clay pigeon shooting. The Rheged visitor centre is also close by near to Penrith, which regularly holds art exhibitions and hosts special events.
