Great Calva is the largest in a complex of cottages at Monkhouse Hill. It has been recently refurbished to the ultimate 5 star standard and can accommodate families of up to 12 +cot with ease. Cottages can also be booked together for up to 46 guests – ideal for families and friends wanting to holiday together. Monkhouse Hill is situated in the unspoilt splendour of North Lakeland, near Caldbeck. There is lots to do on-site with a fully equipped games room and 4 acres of enclosed grounds to explore, an outdoor play area, age appropriate toy boxes, outdoor games and a DVD/video library. With thoughtful touches such as a welcome tray of local goodies and access to a “baby and toddler rescue cupboard” for forgotten necessities you know that you will find a warm welcome here.
Nestling in the unspoilt splendour of North Lakeland, near Caldbeck, ten self-catering holiday cottages have been sympathetically converted from 17th century farm buildings. Monkhouse Hill is easy to find being only 15 minutes drive from the M6. These beautiful cottages have been recently restyled to a contemporary Cumbrian design, using local artists and craftsmen and have won numerous awards for quality, excellence, Environmental practice and innovation. Together with all the facilities available on-site guests holidaying at Monkhouse Hill have free access to the superb North Lakes Spa leisure facility in Penrith; about 15 minutes drive from the cottages. Amenities include swimming and paddling pools and a games room with Nintendo Wii and air hockey.
Families can be accommodated in cottages that sleep from 2 to 12 people with space for cots and are fully equipped for every families needs. Cottages can also be booked together for up to 46 guests - ideal for families and friends wanting to holiday together. The family cottages at Monkhouse Hill have been designed with space, flexibility and safety in mind. Spacious upstairs living areas, with well equipped kitchens, make the most of the panoramic views and vaulted roofs. Together with digital Freeview TV/video and DVD players, free access to a large video/DVD library you will also find a selection of family games is kept in each cottage (Monopoly, Scrabble, Chess etc). Additional children's toy boxes with age appropriate games can be ordered free of charge. Cottages have a small patio area in the courtyard, with garden tables, chairs and barbecue equipment available to enable you to enjoy eating al fresco in the stunning surroundings. For that added touch of luxury hot tubs are available in three of the cottages. The basics - wooden cots (with duvet or blankets), highchairs, and stairgates - can all be booked in advance and set up for your arrival.
All guests have use of the 4 acres of grass paddock, which is ideal for picnics, ball games and dog exercising. Every age from young to old will enjoy the indoor Games Room, with full size table tennis, pool and table football - and the unique 'digger and dozer' construction site. A great adventure playground with swings, tower, rope frame, slide, tunnel and suspension bridge is also on-site suitable for children aged from about 2 to 9.
Don't worry if you run out of space in the car - Monkhouse Hill have very thoughtfully provided a 'baby and toddler rescue cupboard' that contains just about everything you could think of - baby monitor sets, nightlights, bed protectors, baby bath, potty, playpen, backpack carrier, pushchair, bouncy chair, fireguards and lots more. All can be borrowed free of charge (subject to availability). You have access to a shared pay telephone and mobile reception in the area is quite good. As an alternative to Wi-Fi you can borrow USB 'dongles' (to access broadband via mobile networks) available for free loan during your stay. A shared laundry room is available for guests convenience with (free of charge) washing machines and tumble driers.

There's no need to worry about loading your car with food and drink - it can all be pre-ordered and delivered ready for your arrival! Eating in? Get the children to bed, put your feet up and relax ... the Royal Oak at Welton will deliver beautifully presented, ready to serve suppers to your cottage. For a night out without the children, we can normally arrange babysitting - why not combine a visit to the North Lakes Spa with dinner at the Martindale Restaurant, famed for its use of local Cumbrian produce.
Not far from Monkhouse Hill are a wide variety of Lake District themed wildlife attractions and working farms, including Trotters World of Animals and Rheged Discovery Centre plus the kids will love the narrow guage Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway. The Lakes are a great place to introduce children to real walking - with plenty of books on hand for useful suggestions.
