About St Moritz Hotel - a luxurious child friendly hotel

St Moritz Hotel is an art-deco inspired luxury hotel in Cornwall, overlooking the stunning Daymer Bay near Rock, and provides a fabulous setting for a family seaside break. Since the 1930s, thousands of people have made an annual pilgrimage to this particular area of the North Cornwall coast for a much needed escape from the daily stresses of urban life. Today is no different, with their acclaimed Cowshed spa, award-winning cuisine and breathtaking scenery, your stylish Cornwall hotel break is right here.

Karen and the girls visited on our behalf:

Standing on top of a hill but discreetly hidden from view, St Moritz is a delight from the moment you find it, a striking white building on a sunny day it would look perfectly in place in the Mediterranean rather than blending into the north Cornwall scenery.

North Cornwall in April was far from Mediterranean, wind and rain battered the shoreline but significantly the weather almost had no impact on our visit. From the moment you arrive you receive a genuine warm welcome that brings a touch of sunshine the team here really cannot do too much for you.

The main building does not feature any accommodation so we were escorted to our rooms whilst everything on site was thoroughly explained to us.

The rooms were perfect for our needs. Travelling as one adult and two teenagers, our ground floor suite and one twin bedroom were separated by a floor but you can book them opposite each other and a hall door then becomes yours creating a spacious private accommodation format for families. This would be especially good for younger children or if travelling with Grandparents.

Our Suite had a full working kitchen that includes a dishwasher and washing machine, ideal for longer stays or families with very young children.  the kitchen was well stocked with utensils and cookware. All rooms share the lovely pared back seaside interior; this is not a place for chintz!

Floors are very sensibly wooden, bathrooms offer great power showers (cowshed amenities in full size bottles are a treat) and the beds the comfiest ever. Even the twin bed options are spacious and hugely comfortable. The suite had a large tv, dvd, ipod dock and a selection of board games providing wet afternoon entertainment. The balcony from the bedrooms opened directly onto the gardens on the ground floor but first floor and above will have an amazing view, do note that only the rooms at the back have the views. And what views they are, far reaching over the Atlantic but more of that later.

Places to Eat

St Moritz now offers 3 dining options and we did sample them all. The Seaside Restaurant is located near the outdoor pool and in summer there is a terrace for dining; open all day it offers lighter meals and everything from coffee to an evening drink can be enjoyed here. The bar offers a similar menu but dining here you are in the hub of the main building and it feels a little more elegant for the evening, enjoy drinks first and then a relaxed supper.

The restaurant is informal, an open plan kitchen operates and it is hard not to watch the chefs busy at work, the menu they produce is stylish and simple, they really do use local, seasonal produce and the food is of a high standard without being over priced (remember this area of Cornwall is expensive).

Breakfast is served in the main restaurant and has every option you could want, wide cereal selection, fruits, pastries and cooked menu (wonderfully cooked to order rather than a help yourself buffet).

Cowshed Spa

An added bonus at St Moritz is the Cowshed Spa, an offshoot from the Soho House group it has been re-created in the same style and offers all their signature treatments, the spa girls are all delightful and well accomplished in their treatments. Arriving stressed and in need of some pampering this was certainly the place to find a bit of inner calm, cannot recommend it highly enough.

Children's Facilities

The indoor pool remains from pre new hotel days, but it is adequate and the new sauna/ steam room and changing facilities balance the overall experience. An outdoor pool will be open during the summer months and has been perfectly positioned to be shielded from the coastal wind; I suspect this area will be a real sun trap. For younger children the garden area by the outdoor pool offers space to play, there are also tennis courts, a play room with games for little ones and a wii/playstation. A laundry room for wetsuits is also offered.

Days Out

Polzeath is one of the best surf beaches in North Cornwall with two well established surf schools offering lessons for every ability and a small range of shops and restaurants. There are many great walking routes from the hotel , take the coast path via Daymer Bay to Rock and enjoy an expensive coffee to sustain you for the walk back (nothing in Rock is cheap) or walk towards Polzeath and across to Pentire Head taking in the most stunning views out to sea.

And finally...

So far so good and all things you would expect from a luxury hotel but where the St Moritz offers something extra really is in the standard of their service, a rotating team of guest hosts work with the reception team and duty managers to ensure there is always someone to help you plan your day. They cover everything from talking you through the days weather (very changeable in Cornwall) to offering lifts down to the beach in Polzeath, over to Rock or for an evening out; this is a great service that does mean you don't have to take the car everywhere. The team will book surf lessons and other activities, make dinner reservations (note Nathan Outlaw has a restaurant in Rock) and generally help with any and all aspects of your stay. This team are great and really make you feel that you are somewhere very special and you are, the best seaside hotel you could hope to find.
