Not only can you sample the delicious ware on offer at Lucy Cooks in Ambleside but you can pick up some culinary skills at her cookery school in Staveley near Kendal. Emily and I booked on the Family Cookery Day as a special treat while we were on holiday in the Lakes.
Parking was easy at the Mill Yard in Staveley and we both were very excited at the prospect of spending a full day cooking and learning skills with a talented chef. It is not often that Emily(10) and I get chance to spend so much time together sharing a passion we both love.
We were warmly welcomed into a very slick and professional reception area whereby we quickly checked in and dumped our personal stuff into a locker for the day.
In the spacious ground floor briefing room we met our instructor for the day, Tim Bestwick who ran through our itinerary. Together with a cup of tea I couldn't resist sampling a piece of lemon drizzle cake on offer - and all before 10.30!
Moving upstairs to where all the action takes place we donned our smart aprons and became familiar with our high tech cooking areas.
Tim would start each lesson by demonstrating how easy each recipe was with the aid of a large flatscreen TV that enabled you to see exactly what was going on in the mixing bowl. Then you were left to pick up your already weighed ingredients to carry out the same procedure under your own steam.
Throughout the day we made a batch of bread, part of which became our base for pizza which we devoured for our dinner, Inside Out Cheese Burgers (went down a treat on a barbeque later), Red Onion Relish, and Butter Fingers.
We all must have been quite adept at cooking as we managed to finish the full days itinerary by 3pm so Tim very kindly showed us how to make the most delicious Tarte Tatin which had to be sampled of course.
During the day there was an assistant who was there to wash up your equipment which made cooking a very enjoyable task without all the cleaning up.
Emily and I thoroughly enjoyed the day and went home armed with goodies together with some fabulous ideas that will inspire us to be more creative in the kitchen at home.
To book an adult and a child on a Family Funday cookery course it cost £125. For further details on how to book please click here or call 015394 32288.
