About the owners

Jo Couch

Listed since January 2024

Hydrangea House is our 'humble brag', old Kentish slang for modestly bragging about something which one is actually very proud of. Our 'little house by the sea', was born out of the desire to do something positive with a small critical illness payment that came my way when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. It was what I'd dream of whilst enduring treatment. Hythe was where we retreated when we needed to escape, children and dog in tow, bundled into the car to soak up the sun or to embrace the winter winds along the promenade. Whatever the weather we'd return revived, ready to tackle whatever life had in store for us. We aim to repay our gratitude of our situation by donating back to the organisations that supported us.

Retreat, Relax, Revive.

Owner recommendations

  • Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway

Stopping at 4 stations,  all within walking distance of a beach, the miniature  railway provides you with a unique way to explore this quaint corner of Kent.

  • Port Lympne Wildlife Park

Journey to South America, Asia, and Africa on an authentic safari and see some incredible animals along the way. Get up-close with life-size prehistoric creatures in the Dinosaur Forest and wander pathways to discover where the wild raptors roam.

  • Folkestone Creative Quarter & Harbour Arm

Folkestone’s restored Harbour Arm is a beautiful promenade out at sea with a world-class view. Formerly a ferry port, Folkestone Harbour Arm is now home to a growing collection of independent businesses and has become a hub for food, drink and entertainment in Kent.

  • Castles or Vineyards

Take your pick … Kent is home to the finest the UK has to offer. Enjoy a guided tour with wine tasting at the vineyards and winery of Chapel Down or wander the grounds of Stutfall Castle, a fort dating back to Roman times.

  • Lower Leas Coastal Park

The Lower Leas Coastal Park was opened in 2000 and is split into three broad recreational zones. Beginning at The Leas Lift, the formal zone comprises pine avenues, gardens and flowers blooming all year round. The fun zone is home to the largest free adventure play area in the south-east and the ever popular amphitheatre. The wild zone is a haven for quiet recreation, where sensitive habitat management allows wildlife to thrive.
