Top tips

A trip to Beadnell isn’t complete without checking out the local food scene - think gastro pubs, seafood bistros, tea rooms, it’s a real treat.
The garden gate will take you through the dunes directly to the beach so the kids can play until the sun comes down (it’s so close they’ll even hear you call them in for supper!)
Wetsuits are more than welcome when visiting Beadnell Bay, be sure to pack them so you can enjoy the waves all year round.

Marram cottage’s ideal beachfront location behind the sand dunes of Beadnell Bay makes it a wonderful family retreat. For an escape without the hustle and bustle of many other British seaside hotspots, the cottage provides a home-away-from-home so you can unwind, reset, and soak up some precious family time. Inside, the cosy decor reflects the sense of peace in the landscape giving you the feel of staying in your very own (rather large) beach hut. The bungalow is all set on one floor, sleeping up to six guests. The sociable living space is complete with a log burner so you can cosy up on the sofas and warm your toes after a day of walks along the coast. It opens out into the sun room at the back of the house, which is the perfect spot for some morning peace and quiet before the kids wake up, and has a comfy chair for curling up in with a book or nursing your morning coffee while looking out onto the dunes.

When heads are starting to feel a little heavy after a day playing on the beach and it’s time to turn in, there are three homely bedrooms awaiting some seaside slumber. The first bedroom has a double bed for the parents and there is a further twin bedroom and bunk bedroom for the kids to share. There’s also a family bathroom with a bath tub so you can enjoy an evening soak when your bones start to feel a little sore.

The outdoors certainly calls you at Marram Cottage and there’s plenty of it. You’ll find a cosy, enclosed terrace at the back of the house which is south-facing so you can catch the rays in the warmer months. Complete with plenty of outdoor furniture and a barbecue, there’s even a little garage to store bikes and water sports gear if you’re planning an active getaway. Of course, the highlight is Beadnell Bay being less than 200m down the garden path meaning you can enjoy all-day views out to sea and unrestricted access to beach fun that the whole family will love.

Unfortunately Marram Cottage cannot accept any pets due to owner family allergies.

Eat

Marram Cottage is well equipped for your self-catering stay with plenty of amenities to serve up some wholesome holiday grub. The kitchen has a fridge/freezer, oven with hob, dishwasher, microwave, kettle, and toaster so whether you just want a coffee in the morning or you’re planning to impress the family with your culinary prowess, you’ll find everything you need. There’s also a barbecue and dining table in the back garden so you can enjoy an outdoor feast - head to local butchers, R Carter & Som for one of their famous ‘Bamburgh Bangers.’ Once the kids are tucked up in bed, why not head out for a tipple or two under the fairy lights and listen to the waves crash into the shore...utter bliss.

The beauty of Marram Cottage is its proximity to Beadnell Bay, you can set up on the beach for the day and revel in the novelty of nipping back to the cottage for a brew, a snack, or an ice cold can from the fridge - just be sure to stock the fridge for the kids! The nearest shop is Coop at Seahouses but there are also plenty of major supermarkets in Alnwick and Berwick-on-Tweed. Most of them deliver to the cottage too or you can try out Food Heaven, a locally sourced food delivery alternative. The food heritage along the Northumberland coast is rich and varied so if you head further afield you can get some great local produce. Sunnyhills of Belford is a great farm shop with a play area for the kids. For fresh seafood, Lindisfarne Oysters family-run business sells fresh oysters grown on the shore of the Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve and Swallow Fish in Seahouses has its very own smokehouse if you fancy tasting some Craster kippers.

The rich local food scene is well worth checking out if you fancy a break from cooking. The Craster Arms, Beadnell Towers, Saltwater Cafe, Bar and Bistro and the Landing - all located within walking distance of Marram Cottage serve up amazing food and drink in warm and welcoming surroundings. A short drive away is Bamburgh which is bursting with cosy pubs like The Castle and classic tea rooms like that of Copper Kettle. The Potted Lobster is a small bistro style restaurant specialising in local seafood, ideal for a family meal out. Seahouses has plenty of eating options too from the traditional fisherman’s pub, The Old Ship Inn, to the British holiday-classic fish and chips. You’ll also find a few takeaway options here if you fancy a night in, grab yourself an Indian feast or stop off at Elam Pizzeria after a day exploring Seahouses.

Activities

With Beadnell Bay as your back garden, beach fun with the family is a must but Marram Cottage’s location on such an enriching coastline leaves plenty more to explore…Beadnell is also home to the only west facing harbour on the East Coast plus it is a watersport hotspot. Try out kayaking, paddle boarding, wind surfing, jet skiing, wakeboarding, kite surfing and more. If adrenaline-filled activities aren’t your cuppa, the horse-shoe shaped, crescent beach is ideal for sand-castle building, a game of beach cricket or even sitting back and watching the fisherman catch wild salmon and sea trout in their colorful boats dotted along the harbour.

For a day out with a David Attenborough seal of approval, head just up the coast to Seahouses where you can sail to the Farne Islands and see spectacles of seabirds, lazing seals, puffins ruling the roost, and dolphins skimming the coast - trips run from March to October.

Just a little bit further up the coast is Bamburgh, renowned for its stretches of sandy beaches and of course, England’s finest coastal fortress, Bamburgh Castle. Northumberland isn’t short of castles with 70 of them to explore! Dunstanburgh Castle is another impressive one with its ruins sitting on the cliff top offering impressive views out to sea. Embleton Bay overlooks its dramatic ruins if you’re looking for a picture-postcard holiday snap.

For Harry Potter fans, a trip to this part of the world wouldn’t be complete without a day in Alnwick. It’s magical castle famed for its feature in the first two films, it’s also home to the Percy family who have inhabited the castle for over 900 years. The beautifully manicured Alnwick Garden is also a must-visit with labyrinths of flowers and Poison Garden tours - it’s one for the whole family.

By Road

Beadnell is easily accessed by the A1. Exit at Causey Park, follow the local route to Stobswood and follow signs for Seahouses.

By Air

Newcastle Airport is the closest - just less than an hour from Marram Cottage.

By Rail

Chathill is the nearest railway station, continue on by bus or a 10-minute taxi (Park’s Taxi Hire) to Beadnell.

By Sea

The closest major ferry port is Newcastle Ferry Terminal which is just over an hour away.

Hi, I'm Adam and I live in Leeds with my wife and 2 children. Leeds is great but we also love Northumberland and Beadnell specifically. My wife’s family are from the North East and we have made many happy memories ourselves from staying at Marram Cottage… so much so that we decided to take the plunge and buy it in July 2024. We absolutely love Marram Cottage and continue to use it ourselves on our own family holidays. It is a very special place - we want to give our guests the opportunity to visit and build their own amazing memories.

Enjoy beautiful beaches, picnics & BBQs, sandcastle building, crabbing and many water sports (surfing and body/paddle boarding).
Visit and explore ancient castles - Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh and Alnwick.
Amazing coastal walk from Beadnell to low newton to Craster via Dunstanburgh castle, ending with a stop at the Jolly Fisherman in Craster for a crab sandwich and chips with a pint while admiring the sea views.
Take a boat trip from Seahouses to the Farne Islands and take in the wildlife - puffins, seals and dolphins.
