The South Bank

With the infamous South Bank Centre putting on all kinds of shows and exhibitions throughout the year this is a must visit during any time of the year. The cafe is a good spot to sit and people watch - whilst there we had a troop of dancers filming and dancing spontaneously behind everyone going about their business - it was brilliant fun. The cafe is reasonably priced, the gift shop a perfect place to pick up a pressie and it feels safe enough to let the kids have a bit of a wander around.

The London Eye

A short stroll from the South Bank along the river brings you to the Merlin entertainment stretch. The London Eye has pole position as all eyes are drawn upwards - it's an excellent way to start your day trip, spotting the Shard, St Pauls and well-known landmarks.

It is highly recommended to book in advance as unless you're there with the larks - which we were - then the queues can get ridiculous. The Shrek Experience (on our to-do list), Sea Life (I was a little uncertain but it was a well-spent few hours with some excellent displays and interactive stuff for the kids to do) as well as the London Dungeons. London Dungeons

Recommended for older children, though a five-year-old accompanied my eldest two around and was fearless so perhaps it depends on your own continence! Aggie (8) started backing out of the door as we were getting tickets so at least we didn't traumatise her too much. My older girls, Eve, 14 and Lottie who is 12, joined me and Aggie and my large glass of white at the South Bank Centre grinning from ear to ear - they had been terrified, screamed a lot and howled - they loved it!
