Colchester Zoo is now one of the finest Zoos in Europe due to a constant programme of development and has won the coveted Large Visitor Attraction of the Year” Award and the “Sustainable Tourism Award” for its efforts in recycling and green practices from the East of England Tourist Board.
With over 270 species to see, set in 60 acres of beautiful parkland and lakes, Colchester Zoo is well worth a visit. There are over 40 daily displays, an undercover soft play area, 4 adventure play areas, The Lost Madagascar Express road train and much more.
Conservation is the primary concern of the Zoo and some of the endangered species you can see are Komodo Dragons, Waldrapp Ibis, Amur Leopards and Amur Tigers. There are seven zones in the zoo: Beginning, Aquatic, Valley, Lakelands, Kidz, African and Heights. The Wilds of Asia area has Orangutans, Sloths, Parrots, Iguanas and other animals as well as a huge adventure playground for children.
The aquatic zone has one of the longest underwater tunnels in Europe at 24 metres long where you can see Patagonian sea lions. Other highlights include Humboldt penguins which you can see being fed. Large mammals on display include a white Bengal tiger, African Lions, Hyenas, Elephants, Giraffes and Tigers.
The kidz zone has theatre shows where children can get up close to the animals. This area houses a range of domestic animals such as pigs, horses and goats. If little legs are getting tired, the UmPhafa Road Train can take you to the Kingdom of the wild.
Wide choice of family friendly restaurants
There is a wide choice of food outlets ranging from Pizza to a chicken wrap bar. There are healthy eating options too.
How to Find Colchester Zoo
Set your Sat Nav for CO3 0SL. Colchester Zoo is situated on Maldon Road in Stanway, just south of Colchester. Take the A1124 exit (Junction 26) off the main A12 following the brown elephant signs. From the M25: About 40 minutes from Junction 28 of the M25 to reach the A12.

Colchester Zoo is naturally hilly so the terrain can be hard going for disabled visitors. For this reason the disabled are charged a greatly discounted rate.
