About Bovey Castle Lodges

We LOVE it here - luxurious, family friendly and oh so decadent!

The approach to Bovey Castle is wondrous and grand and exciting and the first view of the castle is stunning. Most importantly it is a truly child-friendly hotel with the added advantage of having self-catering lodges! Bovey holds an enviable position overlooking the valley and gardens down to the River Bovey & across to Dartmoor National Park. The stunning Lodges are secreted around the castle grounds providing you with a most decadent self-catering experience, in a fabulous setting. As exquisite and immaculate as everything is, be assured that you will receive the friendliest welcome from all of those at Bovey who are set to ensure that you take away the best memories of a glorious place. .

The Away with the Kids review

Tucked away around the Castle gardens, a very short distance from the main hotel, are 14 private granite-built three-bedroom Lodges. Decorated in a very modern and contemporary style the Lodges are luxurious, very tasteful and feel extremely exclusive (Helen and I were delighted and in fact did a little jig when we landed!). Most importantly they are extensively kitted out with everything you could possibly need to spend quality family holiday time at Bovey - that includes every-thing from fabulous Elemis toiletries to enjoy and wonderfully huge comfy beds to the practicality of high chairs and stair gates that make life just so much easier.

The Lodges easily accommodate up to 8 people (a maximum of 6 adults); children may be accommodated on extra beds if required. Our Lodge was laid out over 3 floors: the ground floor housing the exceptionally spacious open-plan living, dining and kitchen areas; the lower both a queen sized and a twin en-suite bedroom, as well as a fully equipped laundry room; and the first floor a stunning master bedroom with a decadent en-suite and fab power shower (of which all bathrooms have). Neither of us cared which room we took as all were very lovely.

It was so welcome to have our bags graciously carried in (of which there were far too many), have the car parked and be greeted by discreet music playing and a blazing fire warming the place up. To then find the fridge stocked with all the goodies, both food and beverage, that are available to pre-order was quite simply the cherry on the cake (see the web-site for the goodie list!); it ensures that you have so little to do once you arrive, least of all worry about breakfast - just explore your stunning surroundings and indulge in the wonderful, friendly and extremely discreet service typical of such an exclusive place.

The comfortable lounge has a flat screen TV, a DVD player and that gas flame effect fire to chill out in front of whilst watching CBeebies! Outdoors you have your own private terrace furnished with outdoor furniture, and a decking area with steamer sun beds to soak up that sun - if there's no sun the view over the lake is quite appealing too.

Food choices at Bovey are fabulous. There is a range of options from exquisite fine dining to informal Bistro grub (which incidentally has a good children's menu) to tea on the terrace or in front of the fire. If it would be preferable to dine ‘at home' the Bistro offers a delicious take out menu. If you want to be extremely organized you might also order a range of delicious pre-cooked meals to reheat at your own convenience. As mentioned above should you wish to pre-order food it can be delivered to, and unpacked at, your lodge prior to your arrival - the breakfast meats were delicious.

And then of course there is The Old Course; a challenging and most beautiful 18-hole championship golf course. Designed in 1926 by JF Abercromby, considered one of the finest British golf course designers of the Golden Era, Bovey Castle was voted England's Finest Golf Resort 2008 at the World Travel Awards whilst the course has been named one of top 100 golf courses in Britain and provides a challenge of golf to professional and amateur alike.

If golf though isn't your bag the hotel facilities also include the ridiculously indulgent spa (that you will find difficult to extract yourself from), the fantastic indoor pool (open from 7.00 am until 8.30 pm for adults and 9.00 am until 5.30 pm for children who are accompanied by an adult), the gym, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room, beautiful outdoor pool (complete with stunning views), raft building, The Tree Top Adventure, pistol or rifle shooting, fly-fishing, the list goes on ....

Oh and for the kids there is egg-hunting each morning (of the real type), ferret visiting, a falconry display, use of the putting green and croquet lawn, outdoor play area, mountain bikes, the Play Barn (suitable for children over 2) which has lots to keep them occupied and happy and Bovey Rangers, a supervised club offering indoor and outdoor activities for 7 to 14 year olds during school holidays and half terms including treasure hunts, a woodland adventure camp, trampoline and water slide, horse riding, Volleyball and Swingball, the Miniature Pony Centre and pony trekking.

Bovey Rangers is a chargeable activity at £25.00 per morning or afternoon session, or £40.00 if both are taken. You can sign up for sessions on a daily basis. The Play Barn is supervised during school holidays and half terms and is again chargeable.

Do note - to get to the hotel there is a short, but quite steep, hill. If you think that you may need help a golf caddy will excitingly, particularly if you are almost 2 like Alfie, come and whisk you up there. Talking of caddies I hope that, unlike us, you do not hear the scrunching of gravel as a golf caddy whizzes up to your lodge after your setting the fire alarm off whilst charcoaling (toasting) bread - there's nothing like greeting the immaculately dressed Carlos in your disheveled pj'd state feeling extremely sheepish - I still feel mortified. However, I will be back ...... it's too good a place to miss out on!

Do be aware that Bovey levies a discretionary service charge ranging from 5% to 12.5%.
