About Brownscombe Luxury Glamping
Enjoy an idyllic version of rural life on a luxurious family friendly glamping site.
If you’ve not yet jumped feet first into the glamping trend then you may wish to reconsider when you hear about a stay at Brownscombe Luxury Glamping. With four safari tents that sleep 6, a lovely cabin that sleeps 4, plus a delightful hideaway for two, maybe the grandparents could be tempted to join your venture too? Your children are certain to love it here. They can roam to their heart’s content exploring the grounds, collecting eggs and helping to feed the resident friendly farm animals. It won’t be long before they’ve found the rope swings and cargo nets to climb from and a wicker den provides the perfect place to meet their new holiday chums. Brownscombe is situated in a quiet valley so spotting the local wildlife is a regular event. But it’s also near enough the English Riviera to take advantage of more traditional holiday fun and have the best of both worlds. Close to numerous stunning beaches of South Devon and just five miles from Totnes there’s lots to keep all the crew entertained.
The Away with the Kids review
On arriving at this glorious spot in Devon you will be met by Kate who will guide you through the delights of staying at Brownscombe. Set in idyllic surroundings, in a private valley that Kate’s family have farmed for over 30 years it is not hard to fall for its charms. The site is car-free for total tranquillity and to encourage free range children. Once you have unloaded your car outside of your tent and returned it to the car park there's no need for wheel barrows, unless the children insist! The four safari tents are found nestled proudly at the top of a slopped meadow field, each boasting a large outside decking area in which to absorb the serene countryside. Should any members of your party be lucky enough to be staying in the Tabernacle they may get a lift in Kates off roader as it’s located at the far end of the site, in the opposite field to the safari tents. Its outside area is not overlooked by the rest of the site and it benefits from its own hot tub, so once you’ve immersed in the soothing hot waters you feel totally private. It's a great place for a group to holiday, although it is reserved for family Glamping during the school holidays.
The Safari Tents each sleep 6
This is not pretend glamping… this is proper glamping with luxury showers, your own flushing toilet, hot running water and electricity. You will have the most comfortable night’s sleep with no expense spared sumptuous deep mattresses, bed linen and towels. The huge wood burning stoves are large enough to keep you toasty and warm even on the coldest of nights. Kate has also thoughtfully sourced and provide unique long hot water bottles which are also available to buy in the honesty shop as a memento should you grow fond of them.
Your safari lodge can sleep a family of 6 with two bedrooms, a double and a twin, plus a cosy cabin bed, ensconced in what looks like a wardrobe, that your children will be desperate to bag first. Once sleeping arrangements have been sorted you will find your little ones will scamper off downhill to discover the children’s secret play area with rope swings and wicker den. Happily, you have a birds’ eye view of them from the sanctuary of your lodge. You may even get to relax with a good book and enjoy your own unique view of the valley. Each child friendly lodge comes with its own high chair, travel cot, baby bath, changing mat and a toddler gate for the balcony.
Outside every tent has its own outdoor fire pit where families can gather around toasting marshmallows whilst star gazing and planning the next day’s exploits. The more adventurous of you may try your hand at cooking your BBQ on it. However, if you really want time out from cooking (and isn’t everyone allowed when on holiday), with a day's notice Kate can supply a tasty one-pot meal that can be ready on your wood burning stove for you when you return from your day’s activities.
The tents are named after rivers in Devon - Yealm, Bovey, Dart and Tamar. A family sized wood hot tub is positioned outside Tamar Lodge and is optional with a £25 a day fee for up to 6 nights and the 7th free of charge. Dogs are welcome in selected tents (Bovey and Tamar) with bowls and a mat provided.
In a fantastic, secluded part of Brownscombe, the cabin is a unique and luxurious place to stay. With a master bedroom fitted with Egyptian cotton sheets and a glass wall overlooking the fields; twin bunks with portholes where the kids can have their own private den and even a small room that would fit a travel cot or the family dog.
It has a wood burner, table and chairs and a fully equipped kitchen with an induction hob, Belfast sink and fridge. The bathroom has a deep, luxurios copper bath and a low level window you can look out of from the tranquility of your bubble bath.
Outside on the covered, decked porch, you can toast marshmallows on the fire-pit or lie back on the chairs and star gaze.
The Tabernacle sleeps 2
This may just be the perfect bolthole for grandparents who feel they are not cut out for glamping yet yearn to be included in the extended family holiday. You have the most idyllic spot to retreat to just far enough removed to have your own private space yet near enough to participate in all the fun. It is equipped with reclaimed furnishings, luxury bed linen, feature woodland wallpaper and a freestanding Hobbit stove. With the private wood-fired hot tub you are sure to be popular with the grand-kids and should you find a quiet moment the views down the secluded valley are just delightful.
Children can join Kate in her daily farmer’s run, to help feed the resident pigs and collect fresh chicken and duck eggs so that parents can have that indulgent extra half hour lie in. There is also a games room on-site which comes into its own on rainy days. A cupboard packed with board games, Dvds and crabbing buckets to borrow. There is also a pool table, table tennis and table football to keep the teens happy together with a Wi-Fi hotspot for those who can't do without.
There is plenty of space in the field where the tents are located for ball games or a game of frisby. Otherwise simply roam freely amidst the wild buttercup meadows and spot the wildlife. Deer, rabbits, foxes, badgers and many types of wild bird, including the rare cirl bunting can be seen. At night, drift off to sleep listening to the Tawny owls or catch a glimpse of the barn owl as it hunts at dusk.
A converted open Barn is available for all guest to use and commune in. Comfy sofas, Nespresso machine and wifi makes it a great place to hang out. Kids love the outdoor pizza oven and there's also a gas BBQ should you wish to cook outside your lodge.
You can order breakfast, BBQ hampers or cassoulet dinners and pick them up from the on-site larder/honesty shop. The eggs, rare-breed pork sausages and bacon all come from Brownscombe Farm. You can also purchase local produce, drinks and ice creams
All the glories of Dartmoor and the South Hams countryside are on your doorstep and you are close to any number of stunning beaches and historic towns like Totnes to explore.
