About The Cary Arms - Luxury Hotel Rooms & Cottages
The description of an “eight bedroom chic boutique hotel located on Babbacombe Beach with three holiday cottages” is accurate. One could also add that the Cary Arms is a genuinely family friendly hotel, as well as dog friendly. However, it’s the relaxed friendliness of the staff, along with the stunning location and gorgeous interiors that will convince you that you have landed somewhere special. Then there's the food - fantastic! The complimentary children's fishing net, bucket and spade and crabbing lines make for easy days spent doing the simple things in life – a perfect start for a relaxed and refined family beach holiday.
The Away with the Kids review
"It is possible to have an adult getaway with children - we just did at the Cary Arms Inn on the Beach in Babbacombe," Donna.
The Cary Arms is a de Savary's creation. If you do not recognise the name then know it is synonymous with under-stated luxurious accommodation, fine food and genuinely warm welcomes, a fabulous combination that has led to the Cary Arms being awarded 5 AA and 5 Visit Britain stars. The claim that "this is a perfect luxury Devon Inn to enjoy chic beach-side living with all the pleasures and freedom of the South Devon coast" cannot be disputed.

Donna, Peter, Ned and Annie visited:
We were so happy! To catch sight of the Cary Arms is exciting - to walk in to a lovely warm and smiley welcome and immediately feel comfortable is a joy! It's access all areas for the children at The Carys Arms, no designated play area with heaps of toys; how refreshing that children are allowed to simply fit in and they do so seamlessly.
We stayed in the sprawling Captains suite (family suite) comprising two generous, luxuriously prepared bedrooms, a hall holding a coffee bar and a very handy fridge, a huge stunning bathroom and a private outside terrace big enough to keep my inquisitive two year old son from continually looking for an escape route; my eight month daughter got exhausted from just rolling around on the floor.
The crisp linen, wonderfully comfortable beds, fluffy robes, Elemis complimentary toiletries, power shower and sloe gin kept me happy - the humble fishing net and bucket and spade provided hours of fun for the nipper both on and off the beach - we fished in the sea and hunted around rock pools. We caught sea weed resulting in a delighted son and a very proud mommy. Ned also ‘fished' in the room and ‘caught' a bewildered Annie on more than one occasion!
We found eating at The Cary Arms a relaxed affair - despite our having two unpredictable children; the food was fabulous and the service very accommodating and friendly. You may choose from a varied and interesting ‘local' menu and an extensive wine list. The kitchen doesn't open until 6.30 which may be late for some small tummies - so we got an early bowl of delicious pasta cooked for us without a flinch. Children have their very own ‘little nippers' menu and there's even a choice for the dog (should you be brave enough to have children and dogs on the same break!).
Whilst on the subject of dogs the dog friendly rooms come equipped with a dog bed and bowl leaving you more space to pack something for yourself!
The Cary Arms is located right on the beach where hours can be lost pottering in the rock pools or just simply throwing stones into the sea - its that kind of place. There are walks aplenty - the Carys Arms guide book lists the local walks. We opted for a walk along to Oddicombe beach where we got the funicular up to Babbacombe - it is manageable with a pushchair but be aware that there are some steps involved. We visited the model village, which whilst fabulous and definitely worth a visit, proved challenging when explaining that the figures weren't actually toys to play with.
In Torquay, which is minutes drive away, we headed to Living Coast which is an aquatic zoo funded by charity donations. Here we saw sea-life that was under threat and got up close and personal with the penguins - they are free to roam in one particular area - wonderful day out and all for a good cause. Dartmoor is a short drive away and then there's Exeter, less than half an hour in the car if you need a fill of city life.
In summary - The Cary Arms provides child friendly understated luxury; they have got it SO right and it is SO very well done.
