The Away with the Kids review

The Cottages

Each of the properties has a fully equipped kitchen with oven, hob, microwave, dishwasher, fridge, freezer, and nespresso coffee machine. TVs, DVD players, bluetooth speakers, games and DVDs are also included. High chairs, cots, plastic cutlery, plates, cups and anti slip bath mats are available. All 3 properties have central heating. Bridesmere has its own washing facilities and BBQ. Butterdon and Mardon can make use of the communal washing machine and portable BBQ.

Bridesmere (sleeps 8)

Restored in 2015 this former barn and stables provides spacious accommodation whilst retaining a cosy home from home feel.

Watch the deer gather at the end of the private garden, relax in the living area which is open to the eaves, or cook up a feast in the well equipped kitchen. There are two king bedrooms, a shower room and a further bedroom with 4 singles and en-suite family bathroom making this a great place for larger groups to gather. On warm evenings you’ll have all you need to barbeque and dine al fresco, or gather round the fire pit when the sun goes down.

Butterdon and Mardon (sleep 5 each)

Butterdon and her mirror image sister Mardon were converted from stone barns, and comprehensively renovated in 2014. Woodburning stoves in the lounge/dining areas give the cottages a cosy feel, and the kitchens are well equipped. Each cottage has 1 double bedroom and 1 triple room complete with mezzanine play area for the younger guests to enjoy (a stairgate is provided for peace of mind). Outside in the pretty, fenced gardens there is space to sit and marvel at the starry sky.

For Children

There is lots of safe space for children to explore, and activities on site for all the family. Borrow bikes, play snooker, table tennis or table football in the games room, or learn some new green woodworking skills.

Out & About

Located within 50 acres of private land there’s plenty to explore at Clifford Barton. Take a stroll to the lake, stop for a picnic and watch kingfishers flash by, or watch badger cubs playing at dusk.

Further afield you can take a leisurely stroll to the River Teign, embark on a challenging trek across Dartmoor, or go wild swimming at the salmon leaps, one of the best wild swimming spots in the South West. Wonderful Devon beaches are within easy access, with Bigbury (the owners favourite) only 40 minutes drive from Clifford Barton.

Owner's Recommendations

The owner of this property has provided some personal recommendations for things to do, days out and places to eat near this property.
  • Miniature Pony Centre

Lovely place to visit for smaller children. Pony rides, pony grooming, real tractor operating, indoor play area too, falconry displays.

  • Go Ape Haldon

Go Ape, but also lots of other activitie, see Haldon Forest Park below.

  • Wild Swimming Salmon Leaps

The Teign is a short walk from Clifford Barton with great wild swimming spots. The Salmon Leaps just down from Castle Drogo is probably the best wild swim spot in the South West.

  • Castle Drogo National Trust

  • Green Hills Art Gallery

This small art gallery in Moretonhampstead has various exhibitions and sells local crafts.

  • Wild Tribe National Trust

The first Sunday of every month, at Fingle Woods Meadows (a walk/cycle along the riverside track from Clifford Barton) activiites range from tree climbing, bushcraft, raft building and racing, There's always a fire pit and toasted marshmallows too. Highly recommended

  • Clip and Climb

If the weather is not great clip and climb at the Quay Exeter is always a great option with the kids.

  • Eden Project

  • The Horse Pub

Cosy pub/restaurant in Moretonhampstead. Kid and dog friendly with amazing wood fired pizzas and other lovely dishes. There are plenty of other fine dining and good local pubs.

  • Haldon Forest Park

There is a great range of bike trails, from family trails to very technical routes. There is also a skills trail, pump track, cafe, sand pit and Segway hire.

  • Woodlands

An adventure park, lower key than Crealy and better for smaller kids. A large indoor play area with giant drop slides. Another good place to visit on a wet day, but also lots outdoors. My preference of the adventure parks.

  • River Dart Country Park

An outdoor adventure park, bring wetsuits for the pirate ship if chilly. High ropes course, slides etc

  • Crealy

Adventure park with lots of rides, farm etc

  • Shilstone Rocks Riding Stables

  • Bovey Tracey Golf Course
