About Cornish Tipi Holidays

An extra special place, where you and your imagination can go on it's own real-life adventure

Welcome to the home of Cornish Tipi Holidays. This is the place to wake up to the sound of birdsong, go swimming before breakfast in the clear water of a secluded lake. Cook your bacon and eggs over an open fire while you plan your day, or just laze it away in the peace and quiet of your own personal tipi. You can always go fishing tomorrow, and walk along the cliffs the day after that.

Cornish tipi holidays have 40 authentic style North American tipis made of cotton canvas on a framework of locally sourced wooden lodge poles, bound with twine and hessian rope. They come in different sizes - small, medium, large and can accommodate families of up to 12 if half the guests are children. Staying in a canvas tipi with family or friends, living close to the earth and the rhythm of nature, is an extraordinary experience. It's a mixture of old fashioned camping in a beautiful place, with a very modern desire to be more environmentally friendly than just about any other holiday could be.

The Tipi's majestic structures reach up to more than 18 feet high, giving you a generous living area. Compared to an ordinary tent, a tipi interior gives you an amazing sense of space and light. Each tipi is fitted with an external hat to keep the rain out and is equipped inside with the basics you might need for your visit. You will find custom made groundsheets and warm Turkish rugs on the ground and lanterns on the poles. You'll get your own camp stove and cool box. Also provided are kitchen essentials from teaspoons to teapot.

For on-site facilities there are flushing lavatories (one with limited wheelchair access) and hot showers situated at either end of the site, with an additional showers-only block more centrally located near the warden's cottage. Water comes from standpipes for your cooking and washing up which you will need to heat up back at your tipi - basins are plumbed for cold water and are intended for hand-washing only. There is no electricity which means you can't use/recharge any electrical appliances on site.

Few modern campsites allow any sort of fire, however at Cornish Tipi Holidays you are positively encouraged to make a fire in your own fire-pit and enjoy the primal satisfaction it offers. Guidance notes on arrival give advice and safety tips such as using the special trivet provided to help make cooking easier. Outside you'll have a locally made table with bench seating for family meals.

Clear blue one minute and shifting greens the next, Tregildrans Quarry lake is a real Swallows & Amazons experience. You can swim and bathe in the water, fish for rainbow trout, use the boats and canoes to row and muck about, or just sit and watch the swallows and dragonflies dipping the water. You'll need to bring your own rods and fishing licences, but there is lifejackets if you don't have your own. The lake is fenced off from the main path and secured by a gate with a childproof catch so no little ones should be able to wander in by themselves but be aware that there is no lifeguard and children must be supervised at all times. If you fancy bringing your own kayak or Topper to use on the lake by all means do so.

There are village shops a couple of miles away in just about every direction, or a little further to Wadebridge for bigger stores. There is a where to go list in the guidance notes which gives information on local produce, organic outlets etc. The new washing and drying facility is aimed at giving you somewhere to rinse and dry sandy towels and wet clothes even when the weather is unkind.

Cornish Tipi Holidays want to offer guests a really sustainable holiday. A return to real camping means the lowest possible impact on the land and environment. In a world talking excitedly of calculating your emissions, off setting is becoming big business. Stay here, and you can genuinely pat yourself on the back. All wood and other materials are sourced locally and local staff are employed wherever possible.
