Domaine Saladry

Child friendly cottage, Languedoc-Rousillon

About Domaine Saladry

Formerly a working farmhouse Domaine Saladry sits amongst 7.5 acres of mature, landscaped grounds. This lovely secluded complex comprises three gites in total; a two bedroom, a three bedroom and a four bedroom – all are super spacious and could quite easily sleep more, with extra beds if required, essentially though the Malyon’s have ensured that you feel rested and might luxuriate in what are fabulously calming spaces. With a fabulous outdoor pool and shaded hangar to play games Saladry provides a wonderful bolthole to enjoy the simple pleasures in life.

The Away with the Kids review

Neil and Vickie spotted the Domaine back in 2012 with the aim of creating a child friendly haven for families – they achieved it. With stunning views across the sunflower fields towards the Black Mountains and the Pyrenees the domaine offers privacy and seclusion yet is within easy reach of the Canal du Midi, the mountains and South of France beaches.

Furniture is quirky and stylish – ranging from my favourite Ercol pieces to cosy leather Chesterfields. Each gite is styled differently, all are very tastefully, with lots of appealing pieces that make them more than a holiday let.

The Gites

Les Cypres: sleeps 6 + cot. this light and airy gite is perfect for families with grandparents in tow. Les Cypres offers a fabulous double bedroom with en-suite downstairs and a large double bedroom and twin room with a family bathroom upstairs.  Downstairs is open-plan with a large yet cosy lounge, with wood-burner and lots of kitchen and dining space.

Les Pins: sleeps 4 + cot – an extra bed is available if required to sleep 5 comfortably.  Les Pins is an extremely spacious two bedroom gite with a lovely open plan living area downstairs and two huge bedrooms upstairs – each with an en-suite.  Both bedrooms have double beds with beautiful views across the fields. It’s lovely.

Les Acacias: sleeps 8 + cot and an extra bed if required.  Les Acacias is the largest gite – in fact the overall space is enormous, offering a double height lounge area, open plan kitchen and dining spaces, a fireplace and a wood-burner along with four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a separate loo. The downstairs communal area is fabulous with enough space for two families to not collide and relax across two lounges. Upstairs the mezanine floor offers more scope for time out reading alone if needed. The loggia alongside the lounge area eating al fresco is simple – with sliding doors into the garden you have the best of both worlds throughout the year. Downstairs there is a large double bedroom and a luxurious bathroom with shower and twin sinks. The toilet is separate.  Upstairs are three further bedrooms, two double and one twin with a spacious bathroom with shower, sink and toilet.

There is a vast range of books, DVDs and board games to share during your stay. The simple request is that you look after them. All gites have cleaning equipment, hoovers, ironing boards etc. Washing machines and airers (as well as a washing line) are available too.

Each gite has it’s own garden area with a gas fired BBQ as well as it’s own al fresco dining area – it’s so civilized!  Seating reas are also scattered around where the children can meet up and have a natter about their plans for the day and meet up at night.

Things To Do – on site

The Grounds are lovely - quiet and peaceful with lots of space for the kids to run around in. The fenced pool area was specifically created at the top of the grounds to make the most of the views all round.  With a pool house containing showers, loos and a kitchen and seating area a day out at the pool is a doddle.  Shaded areas allow you to enjoy the space throughout the day. There is a paddling depth for little ones, increasing to a depth of 1.5m for swimming.  Chairs, tables, sun-loungers and hammocks offer different ways to chill out!  The pool is not heated and is generally available between May to October – potentially earlier dependent on temperatures. Do note that the pool area complies with all health and safety regulations - that means that children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by adults at all times.

A fabulous idea is the Hangar – a huge shaded space that has bikes dangling from the roof, giant Jenga waiting to be played, darts board and table football for older ones and a bar and seating area to enjoy one another’s company at.  It’s perfect for families to get together during early evening – and a perfect spot for older kids to chill out with their new friends – family too of course.

Cars are parked at the front of the complex and so are always out of the way.

Baby-sitting is available as is a wonderful service - the Domaine’s fabulous van in which you can arrange with Neil to drive a group of you to dine out at a local restaurant for the evening. He will even collect you by prior arrangement – price is negotiable with the man himself!

Things To Do Locally

Neil and Vickie know the area well and are more than happy to help arrange days out trips and offer ideas of places to go and things to see – so you don’t have to be concerned of landing somewhere and having no clue what to do. Bikes are for hire for a very reasonable €10 a day - given you are just a stone's throw(ish) away from the meandering Canal du Midi it's a must do.

You are close to Carcasonne, the most glorious (in my opinion) medieval city, within easy driving of stunning scenery and Cathar castles, one hour away from beautiful beaches, a cycle ride – or stroll away from the Canal du Midi and all it has to offer, the Aude region has loads on offer – not least it’s stunningly pretty countryside and amazing mountain ranges. There’s nothing better than hopping in your car with a destination in mind and a rambling road on which to find it – the Aude may not be familiar to you the first time round but it will certainly pull you back – and Domaine Saladry is a fine place in which to explore it.
