La Julerie

Child friendly cottage, Brittany – Family friendly cluster of cottages with swimming pool, Le Cote D'Armor, Brittany

About La Julerie

This place prides itself on being family-friendly

Near to St Malo ferry port and also historic towns of Dinan & Dinard, La Julerie is an ideal base for families and friends wishing to discover the joys of Brittany. Situated in a quiet rural setting, away from main roads, La Julerie is a small cluster of four French holiday cottages with shared access to an indoor heated swimming pool and large games room. As its name implies, La Vieille Ferme was originally the old farm house and together with the adjoining farm buildings it was converted into characterful self catering holiday cottages. La Julerie lends itself to large family get-togethers booking all four of the gites together for a family holiday. Happily with a large salon and corner kitchen,  La Vieille Ferme can easily seat and dine 24 guests around its tables. This large social space is ideal as you can all eat together, but each family can then retire to their own gite if they so wish to. The coast is less than 20 minutes away and there are many safe sandy beaches, some have sailing or surfing schools.

La Julerie is at the end of a no through road, so there is no passing traffic, in fact the nearby roads are very quiet with minimal traffic, making it an ideal place for youngsters to learn to ride their bikes and get some road sense. Although you are nestled in a rural haven you are not far from all the conveniences and shops of the local town Corseul, less than 2km away. La Julerie was a disused farmhouse when it was discovered and thus purchased in 2000 by British owners. Falling in love with it's then hidden charms and quickly realising its potential Robert Norman and his son Tim, set about converting the plot into the lovely cluster of holiday cottages it is today. Tim lives across the yard with his family, who did all of the building conversion work, knows this place better than most and is a fantastic source of knowledge for families seeking advice for days out, the best child friendly beach or family friendly restaurant. Tim married local French girl, Lydiane, who has her own hair salon across the yard from the gites and will take care of any unruly tresses during your stay.

Child friendly cottages

Whilst all the gîtes have modern facilities, great care has been taken to ensure that all of the old beams are exposed and the walls are finished in a traditional Breton render, and to retain the original features wherever possible. All of the holiday cottages have open plan downstairs living so that while the mealtimes are being prepared the family are all able to socially interact so nobody gets left out! Quite often large family groups will book all four of the gîtes together for a family holiday. Whilst each part of the family can retire to their own gite and enjoy their own space, they can also all sit and wine and dine together in La Vieille Ferme as there is a huge living and dining area, spacious enough to accommodate all 24 guests. There is even room for the children to get down from the table and play games in the salon area or watch TV or play the with the DVD.

La Vieille Ferme which sleeps 6, has patios both in front and to the rear of the cottage, La Vieille Ferme’s  tiered lawned garden area is alongside the cottage; as its front patio is invariably the warmest spot at La Julerie its wooden table and chairs and the Weber or drum barbeque have been left there. All of the other gîtes have lawns to the front and patios opening up to lawns to the rear. Les Étables aux Hirondelles sleeps 4, Les Écuries sleeps 5/ 6 has been designed to welcome both able and disabled guests with its wide doors, low level worktops in the kitchen, and a large downstairs shower room. Le Grenier is the largest of the properties sleeping 8 in three bedrooms across 3 floors.

Baby and toddler facilities

The owners of La Julerie have virtually all of the equipment parents need when taking their infants on holiday, which means you can travel light and don’t need to bring items from home.  Besides cots, high chairs and stair barriers there is also a baby changing table, baby bath, bottle sterilising unit, swing chair and baby chair and a listening device etc. Where needed all kitchen cupboards and upstairs windows have locks which are reversible and only need be engaged when infants are in the property. There is also fitted barriers to the patios doors.

Swimming Pool and Games Room

The indoor heated pool is over 9 metres long and has a level bottom at a depth of 1.65m which makes it ideal for parents with young children as the parents can stand anywhere in the pool to look after their infants, but at the same time it is deep enough for anyone to enjoy a "proper swim". The indoor heated swimming pool is usually open from the beginning of  April until the end of October and in fine weather the retractable glass cover can be opened. For security, access to the pool is only via the adjoining gamesroom; the other 3 sides of the pool are enclosed within a walled patio which is an ideal suntrap and a good place to lay on a sunlounger and sunbathe. The games room has a table tennis table, a seating area, 2 showers/changing rooms and a separate wc; whilst outside there are swings and slide and a sandpit for children and also a playhouse. Books and games are available in the games room. There are many toys for younger children including several sit on ones. In the 1/2 hectare of garden area there are swings and a slide for the younger children and also a Canadian playhouse, there is badminton equipment and a set of boules.

Location in Brittany

Plenty of trips lie within a short drive as the holiday cottages are 2km from Corseul, 10km from the historic town of Dinan and only 20km from a large number of safe sandy beaches, of the Côte D’Armor in northern Brittany. Several beaches offer sailing, and all types of surfing schools –wind, kite and sand yachts; just what the teenagers and more adventurous parents enjoy. One of the many safe sandy local beaches in the area is St Jacut, well worth a visit and less than 20 minute drive from La Julerie. There is a sailing school on the beach and also a beach snack bar. St Jacut, at low tide it is the starting point to a walk to offshore island of Les Ebihans. Accessible on foot at low tide young children will love the walk scouring for treasures in rockpools and finding crabs, shrimps and shells on the way.

La Julerie is only 10km from the historic town of Dinan where you can see many medieval buildings, or enjoy their weekly market or wander down a cobbled street to the port and enjoy lunch alongside the river. The world famous Mont St Michel is less than an hour’s drive from La Julerie as is the capital of Brittany - Rennes where you will find museums featuring the history of this ancient part of France.

  • Dinan and St Jacut

There are supposed to be over 250 eating places in Dinan, You can have as many crepes, pizzas and sea food meals as you wish to eat in different venues whilst you are on holiday. A favourite of ours is the beach snack shack at St Jacut; we will go there when it is high tide around 12-14 hrs, have a swim, walk over to the snack bar and have a delightful salad, but they do serve a selection of child friendly food as well, and all at a very reasonable price. Alongside the shack are the changing rooms for the sailing schools, so, if your children wish to learn to sail, or improve their sailing, this is as good a school as anywhere, but you will need book before your holiday. Please contact us and we shall do this for you.
