About Le Portail Bleu Gites
Sarah and Guy set up Le Portail Bleu Gites with families in mind. Sleeping from four to seven this brilliantly child friendly cottage complex is found along a private gated driveway and is surrounded by trees and parkland, has a two-acre garden, a heated outdoor pool, play areas and animals to visit - a relaxing escape for all the family particularly knowing the children can safely explore their new grounds.
The Away with the Kids review
Le Noyer Gîte: sleeps five in three bedrooms. Sympthathetically converted from a 200 year old byre Le Noyer retains exposed traditional features of oak beams and stone walls whilst providing the comforts of home.
Le Lierre Gîte: sleeps five to seven in two bedrooms plus a sofa bed in the large living room. Le Lierre is the largest holiday cottage and is a carefully restored 18th century gite retaining original chestnut joists, floorboards and the lovely ‘cheminee’ or mantled fireplace.
Le Noyer and Le Lierre are attached so are ideal for a double party holidaying together.
La Feuille Verte Gîte: sleeps four in two bedrooms. A charmingly renovated 17th century cottage retaining two enormous original oak beams, a ‘cheminee’ and ‘lucarne’ window upstairs.
All of the cottages have black-out blinds in each bedroom and enjoy outdoor terraced areas with picnic benches, chairs, loungers, parasols and BBQ's, as well as the following features: UK Digital TV and DVD player, CD player, washing machines, microwaves and power showers. Le Noyer and Le Lierre have dishwashers. All cottages have wi-fi.
Baby and toddler friendly equipment includes cots with proper mattresses, toddler bed guards, high chairs, stair gates (top and bottom), baby baths, potties, step-up stools in bathroom, indoor toys and books (age appropriate), play pen, changing mats, CBEEBIES and CITV – hallelujah! There is a supply of baby and toddler equipment, toys, books and games to keep little ones occupied during quiet time – if such a thing exists!
Kindly Sarah and Guy supply a starter pack of essential items so that you don’t have to pre-empt the closing times of the local French shop-keepers! Towels are not provided so do bring along your own, along with beach towels.
Things to Do
The afore-mentioned two-acre garden is completely enclosed and so you can let toddlers and small children have a wander safe in the knowledge that they are contained.
The 8.5 x 4.3 metres pool will obviously be a hit for families with a 1.0 metre shallow end for children, sloping to 1.6 metre in the deep end. The pool is reliably heated by a dedicated air-source heat pump, as opposed to a solar based system. Pool security in France is very well regulated and reassuringly there is fencing and a plunge-sensor alarm for your childrens safety. The pool is available for use from the end of May to September inclusive. All children must be supervised within the confines of the pool area.
There are two play areas and they are age-appropriate - your children will be delighted at finding something they can do independently. They are also close enough to the gites so that you can easily keep an ear half-cocked – though obviously you may not yet be ready to let them go it alone! It’s worth noting you can watch your children in the play area from the terraces of Le Noyer and Le Lierre.
The under four’s play area has the benefit of an old oak tree which provides shade during sunnier days – here you’ll find the play house, lower play equipment and wooden characters secreted away for your toddlers to search for in the surrounding bushes. The older children’s play area is suitable for four to ten year olds and has plenty to climb, swing and jump on. The zip wire is sure to be a hit with all aged (adult) children too. For the over 7’s there’s also the chance to try their hand at archery. Supervised by Guy and Sarah, the lesson takes part in the adjacent seven-acre field and is sure to be a catalyst for adventures later, as at the bottom of the field the woodland, planted by the current owners, offers paths to follow, and loads of opportunity to build secret dens and let imaginations run wild for a while.
The goats, chickens, ducks and geese are an easy distraction and you are all welcome to feed and pet the animals. Their presence does mean that no pets are allowed at Le Portail Bleu Gites.
An exterior bike storage rack is available should you decide to use the cycle tracks that are available, practically from your doorway. There are enough bike racks for each gite so you have no excuse not to take your bikes along. Should you rather hire bikes once you are there bike hire is available directly from Swin Golf at Rougé, only a short drive away.
Teillay sits in the southern part of Brittany in the Ille et Vilaine, bordering the Loire Atlantique, in an area known as the "Portes de Bretagne" – it is surrounded by unspoilt countryside and is renowned for its vast expanse of forest. This location makes Le Portail Bleu Gites the ideal place for a rural family gite holiday and to explore Southern Brittany and the beautiful Loire valley.
The "Voie Verte" - the Green Way, is a 15 km cycle route from Teillay to Châteaubriant or 15km to Bain de Bretagne in the other direction, on dedicated tree-lined paths, in protected countryside and with picnic areas along the route. The route is well-maintained and is safe for children & families - and it is only 30 seconds from the end of Le Portail Bleu’s drive.
Each gite has tried and tested days out sheets detailing where to go and things to do during your stay, as well as suitable places to eat. Guy and Sarah have researched and compiled these with their own family and they are particularly useful for you to build an itinerary and ultimately make the most of your stay. Of course there is always the option to stay put for as long as you can get away with it and simply enjoy this lovely little spot.
