The Away with the Kids review
Karen visited with her girls:
Much folklore, myth and legend surrounds Glastonbury, a small town in the South West of England that once a year becomes a mecca for thousands upon thousands of music fans. It also has a Tor which is said to be magical and connected to Stone Henge by the lay lines; here under the watchful eye of the Tor you will find Middlewick cottages.
Middlewick is itself something of a magical place, we arrived on a Friday evening to be greeted as if we were old friends, in every sense of the word this welcome was warm, the sun peeped out, the cottage (Tor View) was cosy and has a little gypsy caravan in its garden that makes for an additional room, perfect for older children. A visiting goat popped its head out to say hello and Maggie the resident Labradoodle made her way in to welcome us too, this was most certainly a country retreat. Owners John and Jill gave us a quick tour of the facilities, and a potted history of Middlewick and Glastonbury then left us to settle in. It seriously felt like home, a very special home where your neighbours pick up a guitar and gently strum and an assorted array of fellow guests will stop by for a chat.
Our visit coincided with the Summer Supper Clubs. The theme was local food on the night we dined and the Somerset menu was exceptional, the young team in the kitchen were to be congratulated. The Somerset wine flowed, conversation was easy across the generations (children were welcome) and the moon that night was amazing, perhaps there really is something in the air down here....
A little shop on site is developing and you will be able to purchase all your essentials here, local eggs, milk, fruit and veg. There was a home baked cake waiting for us which, I am ashamed to say, we did have for breakfast and it was wonderful!
The next morning waking early I tackled the Tor, it was spectacular, a steep walk but I cannot recommend it highly enough, John and Jill provided the directions for the short cut and on my return were keen to know what effect the experience had on me, amazing was pretty much all I could manage.
Middlewick is well equipped, the cottages have everything you need to make a self catering break easy; the pool and games will keep young children entertained, the mini collection of animals will always be a hit, there is ample space to play outside and the location is exceptional, but, and it is a big but, what made Middlewick magic was the wonderful people who make it happen. The easy going relaxed way that they approach the running of this business makes it really special and the owners will do all they can to ensure that your stay is just perfect.
One last very special thing to tell you about, Jill has just started to offer rides in a pony and trap, driven by a local character, this is a must do, the horse fairly gets up a pace and you really do feel like you are a latter day Miss Bennett or similar en route to a grand party ... or maybe that was just me, either way it is a treat you must do!
Jill told me that not everyone finds Middlewick, if this is true and I suspect it might be, I am very glad that it wanted to be found by us, cannot recommend a stay here enough.
