The Away with the Kids review
Helen, Joel and Layla visited:
We arrived at The Langham to a warm welcome on a sweltering Friday afternoon earlier in May. We were shown to check-in at the grand reception desk and the kids lounged on some comfy chairs being entertained by the Concierge. Our room was ready despite our early arrival and Cristina on the front desk introduced us to Olivia from Guest Services. Olivia gave the impression of having all the time in the world for the kids who immediately fell in love with her. She guided us round the pool and fitness suite and advised where I might want to dine/ take breakfast with the kids (Palm Court). Olivia stayed with us while we settled into our enormous room, showing Joel how to work the TV and encouraging them to take in the views over the city skyline. There was fresh fruit and soft drinks waiting for us, along with some chocolate treats for the kids.
This was classically elegant 5 star service at its best. The hotel itself is steeped in history. The subtle, stylish finishing touches resulted in a really memorable stay. The staff were friendly and professional with genuine warmth coming from everyone we encountered at The Langham.
The hotel location at the top of Regent Street makes it ideal to explore the sights and its shopping heaven - its an easy walk from Oxford Circus tube station. First stop Hamleys - a 10 minute stroll....well after a quick peek in Libertys for me.
On our return that evening the kids' bath robes and slippers had been carefully laid out - part of the turn down service - much to their delight. Olivia gave us a call to check everything was to our satisfaction - indeed it was!
As it was my 40th birthday, the hotel had left me a card and some delicate petit fours, on a plate, iced with a special message. Even getting ready to go for our evening swim in the pool seemed to take on a sense of occasion, so enthralled were the kids with the grandeur of the hotel! Sensibly, The Langham has set hours when kids can use the pool (all detailed in their very own arrival letter). The pool area is an old bank vault designed in stylish grey slate and low lighting. We ended up having the pool and Jacuzzi to ourselves for a good couple of hours so I was able to relax on one of the heated loungers, what a luxury ... keeping one eye on the kids of course. And all that, before lathering myself in some of the Chuan Spa toiletries which were in abundance in the changing room.
Breakfast in the opulent Palm Court restaurant was another experience altogether. I would go back to The Langham for the breakfast alone! Despite it being self service (which usually means me going back to the buffet at least 20 times!!), the vast array was a sumptuous feast that was really exceptional. The atmosphere quite formal, though not stuffy at all and the kids were overwhelmed by the choices in front of them. The kids were encouraged to order mini hot chocolates and were offered a wide range of juices and smoothies. I was particularly impressed with the cooked-to-perfection scrambled eggs and the wide variety of fresh continental breads and Danish pastries on offer.
Concierge also deserve a special mention. I took quite some time looking at maps and booking trips with Will on the desk and for about 20 mins Ronnie and Mansour were happily entertaining the kids, swapping football stories and London adventures with them. This really makes a difference when you are travelling alone with two small children and nothing was too much trouble for these guys.
The only negative was that I expect wi-fi should be complimentary in such a high-end hotel. They need to sort that out quick! However, there are few hotels in London, or in the UK, that can rival The Langham for luxury, opulence and a sense of occasion, and I have no doubt that we would happily return in the future.
