About The Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage

Located in one of the UK mainland's most northerly points, the Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage is the Keeper's Cottage of a working lighthouse, in Caithness, the far north of Scotland. Here you can enjoy dramatic cliffs, spectacular views, wildlife spotting and  - if you’re lucky - a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis.

The views from the site are simply stunning - you’ll be staying right on the edge of Scotland so think big skies, wild seas and open countryside. The summer days are long, and in autumn and winter the skies are dark - perfect for stargazing. People come to this area specifically to celebrate the celestial, and the location is perfect for wildlife enthusiasts too, with a plethora of sea birds and sea life right on your doorstep.

The Cottage

The cottage is part of the Noss Head Lighthouse site. Fully redecorated and re-equipped in 2018, it is light in the summer and cosy in the winter.  There are 3 comfortable bedrooms (1 king/twin, 1 twin and 1 bunk), 1 bathroom, a well equipped kitchen, large family room with dining table and cosy lounge.

Home comforts are not forgotten either- towels and linens are provided and Wifi and broadband are available free of charge. You’ll have plenty to do indoors for cosy nights in with a TV with Freeview, games, books, and DVDs.

There’s also a washing machine and tumble dryer, so you don’t have to worry about your laundry flying off into the north sea!

Food & Drink

You will find a welcome pack suitable for the length of your stay with either biscuits and hot drinks for weekend visitors, or a selection of local goodies for guests staying longer.

Caithness has treats for foodies too with Caithness Chocolate,  Caithness Summer Fruits (there’ll be a pot of their jam in the cottage for you when you arrive), and fine dining at  Ackergill Tower and MacKays in Wick.

Whilst the cottage is remote enough to feel like you’re away from it all, gone are the days of winching up supplies on the boat - luckily Tesco will deliver your groceries.

It’s a whisky lover’s dream in this part of Scotland -, visit Old Pulteney Distillery in Wick, or Wolfburn Distillery in Thurso.

Activities

You’ll find lots of wildlife spotting and star gazing opportunities at Noss Head. On clear nights you can see the Milky Way, and you might even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. Sunrises and sunsets can be spectacular, and all the family will love the bracing walks around the working lighthouse and across to ruined and magical Castle Sinclair Girnigoe. Back in the cottage warm up and relax over a book, game or DVD.

For days out you can’t go wrong with exploring the coast, with trips to beaches and fishing villages such as including Whaligoe with it’s steps descending to the historic harbour. Or see another side of the area in all its dramatic glory on an exhilarating boat trip.

The Castle of Mey (former home of the Queen Mother) is well worth a visit with the castle itself, beautiful gardens and animal centre.  There are some stunning walks in the area, or you could make an adventure of your stay and discover stone circles, cairns and iron-age brochs through the Broch Project.

Take your bikes if you want to explore the local countryside and coast on wheels- but leave the sports car at home- the access track is bumpy!

Kids and Parents

Children are very welcome in the cottage and you’ll find a travel cot as well as plastic cutlery and plates. There is a small selection of children's books mainly about lighthouses and a selection of family games and jigsaws as well as some DVDs. Children should be supervised outdoors as there is a low sea wall between the compound and the cliffs.

The Owner: Benedicta

“The books "The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch" and "Five Go to Demon's Rocks" have a lot to answer for! We were thrilled to buy the lightkeeper's cottage in 2017 and love giving our guests the chance to create happy memories exploring Noss Head. “

A unique escape from the everyday - embrace the outdoors in this dramatic and spectacular part of Scotland.
