About Natural Retreats, Yorkshire Dales

Such a fantastic place; environmentally sound, child-friendly, outdoor freedom - a fabulous family retreat - you really have no excuse not to go.

One of the reasons that we launched Away with the Kids is that the UK has stunning places to stay for all to enjoy and we should be celebrating that fact – and boy have we found the perfect accommodation for you to do so.  The Natural Retreats properties in Yorkshire are stunning. Built with truly sustainable principles from natural materials and an ethos that abounds with doing the right thing for our planet these places will delight you – because not only will you get the chance to eventually explore our national parks you can do so in the height of luxury. Now that’s no compromise for you or our planet.

For those of you who pale at the idea of the great outdoors - and for whom even ‘posh-camping' is just too much to ask - consider this. A gorgeous wooden retreat filled with every luxury item you might require in the midst of the great outdoors! It's a fabulous place to visit as a family or for a family gathering - perfect independent living with lots of space to congregate.  There is really no excuse - and for those that love the outdoors what a treat…

The Yorkshire Dales provides wonderful scenery for you to ponder over whilst indulging yourselves in your fabulous accommodation. Rolling green hills, dense ancient forests, rivers and streams to splash in - this area has it all including a fabulous coast to coast path leading into the lovely town of Richmond should you need any supplies. It is, of course, the space and the exhilarating fresh air that we all crave from time to time - and there is nothing better for the kids to enjoy - or indeed to tire them out!

Within the boundaries of the Natural Retreats site there is enough flora and fauna to satisfy any aspiring botanists or mini Davis Bellamys. There are numerous country walks and cycle tracks across the site's tranquil setting - ponds to search for frogs, fields to tirelessly chase rabbits - it really is the perfect retreat for those of you wanting to truly wind down and enjoy one of England's great National Parks.

Now for the facts - Natural Retreats, in my humble opinion, is the champion of sustainable eco-chic tourism here in the UK. All of the things that you might like to do at home are here done for you - a "living" sedum roof, solar-glazing to retain heat, sustainable timber to build with, recycled paper and glass providing insulation, natural spring water to drink and shower with, indigenous tree planting and seriously efficient sewage treatment are included. You will also note there are no on-site shops - local economies are supported with an insistence on using locally sourced products, including your floor - there are lots of lovely independent shops in Richmond so go and have a wander.

The decadent open-plan living/dining/cooking space is completely unhindered thereby allowing the huge expanse of glass to do it's job; provide you with a stunning ever-changing picture view to appreciate - it practically invites the outdoors in. The whole residence promotes a feeling of space making it easy and very accessible to holiday as a family - it also provides fantastic crawling ground for a 1 year old not yet walking!

Each residence sleeps 6. There are 3 bedrooms; one large, one smaller double and one twin/double room, each with an en-suite (cots fit easily in the master room).  The wood-burning stove has sustainably sourced logs provided (guards are available), flat screen TV, DVDs, music system (just in case the quiet becomes too loud), a perfectly equipped fitted kitchen with high chairs if required (eco-friendly cleaning products are supplied) and an external decked area with patio furniture from which to savor your surroundings. The welcome hamper containing locally produced food-stuffs provides breakfast goodies and essentials.

This place isn't screaming gadgets, play areas or toys - we have many other places listed available should they be what you want. It's encouraging us all to remember how to make the most of the remarkable things naturally available to us and sometimes we just might need reminding.  The views are glorious, the woodlands adventurous, the hills hilly(!) and the walks really very exhilarating, particularly when reaching the top of the sheep filled meadow at the end of our return walk to camp!

So - you can almost gloat at the minimal impact this holiday might ultimately have when compared to many.

Carbon footprint? Well these places were built with the goal of minimising their build and use impact as much as possible - for the record the Yorkshire Dales site has achieved Zero Carbon status.  If they prevent you getting on a plane they have done an even greater job.
