About Carswell Cottages
Carswell Farm offers a family-friendly haven, close to numerous sandy beaches and the scenery is breathtaking at all times of the year
Carswell Cottages are just a few minutes’ walk from the glorious South Devon coastline and even has its own private cove. The six child friendly cottages are dotted around the working organic dairy farm in idyllic lush countryside. Families love staying at Carswell Farm, not just because they have great days out from them, but because after a busy day sightseeing, it's so relaxing for parents to chill out at the lovely holiday properties knowing there's still so much for the kids to keep occupied around the farm. There is a lovely wildflower meadow with children's play area, including Alice the Tractor and lots of hand crafted wooden toys and logs to play on, as well as plenty of space to just run around. Carswell Farm offers you the chance to watch the cows being milked and you will usually see some of the cows or calves in the surrounding fields next to the cottages
We all like family holidays that make it easy for parents and Carswell Farm Holiday Cottages is one such place. Set in unspoilt countryside in an idyllic location, you feel like a million miles away from normal everyday hectic life. From the moment you arrive and breathe in the fresh sea air and the kids scamper off, you know you’re on to a winner. Carswell Farm is a working dairy farm and has been in the same family for generations. Over time it has expanded by purchasing adjacent Lambside, Caulston and Rowden Farms. These four farms now make Carswell Farm which fields stretch for nearly 4 miles along the coast. All the holiday cottages are just a ten-minute walk from some delightful remote beaches and sandy coves – the private cove is accessed down a step path so not pushchair friendly.
The holiday cottages
Although the six family cottages are all totally separate and dotted around the farm, they do work well for family groups, especially with Corner Cottage as the focal cottage, as the large kitchen table (seating 14 with ease) is perfect for family get-togethers. Each holiday cottage has its own unique charm and character, from a stunning Georgian Farmhouse or a converted barn, to a brand new 'eco-lodge'. There is certainly a cottage to suit families and even some properties can accommodate two families under the same roof. All the holiday properties have all been renovated and converted to high standards and well equipped to provide every home from home comfort. Each has their own private gardens with BBQs and woodburners or open fires. Should you wish to bring grandparents with you and they would be happier in their own space there are a further two properties suitable for a couple. The Mews is a luxury converted barn and also there is the unique property The Beach Hut with its own secluded beach location and wood burning hot tub, however you have to be fairly agile as it is remote with difficult access down a steep path.
Lambside House is a spacious, Georgian property with 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. Surrounded by disused stone barns it’s an ideal property for family get-togethers. This gorgeous farmhouse has 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms and a large lawn garden at the front. With two large living rooms and a playroom there is plenty of living space for everyone to relax into. The playroom has a daybed and pull-out bed under, piano, table football, games, toys and plenty of books. Outside in the garden there is a wooden Wendy house for children to play in and a small paddock - ideal for knocking a ball about!
Corner Cottage is just off a quiet farm lane at Lambside Farm. It offers a wonderful light and airy accommodation for up to 10 people in 5 bedrooms. Two of these bedrooms are downstairs, so ideal for anyone who finds stairs difficult. There is a large sunny garden with a gate through to the lovely wildflower meadow and children’s play area complete with tractor! In addition to the woodburner, Corner Cottage has solar water panels, full central heating and all the standard facilities on offer.
The Lodge - Situated next door to Corner Cottage, this “eco-lodge” has been built to a very high standard and is incredibly eco-friendly – as well as very child-friendly and dog-friendly! It has a timber frame, triple glazing, solar panels and many energy and water saving features
Spring cottage is a semi-detached cottage built in the 1950s for the farm workers and is ideal for a family of up to six.
Shepherd’s Cottage with lovely country views is just across the lane from The Mews. Shepherd’s Cottage is a semi-detached property that was formerly a farm worker’s residence as its name suggests. It has been tastefully modernised and offers wonderful light and airy accommodation with a comfortable, homely atmosphere and great character.
Crofters Cottage is a lovely old stone cottage in the most beautiful spot with no neighbours and lovely views out to sea. It is rustic and fairly basic but if you are looking for peace, tranquility and a chance to escape from everyday life, then this is the cottage for you! It has recently had some renovation work including a lovely spiral staircase, a woodburner and a wood heated hot tub, whilst still keeping the rustic charm and simplicity of the cottage. Please be aware that there is a spiral staircase and the cottage is totally open plan – so no doors to shut out any noise!
A range of baby equipment is provided to ease your packing, e.g. stairgates, travel cots, highchairs, toys & books. Carswell Farm can also offer a soft double sided bed guard (called Dream Tubes) for young children to provide a soft and safe environment for them to snuggle up in for a good night’s sleep. The owners can give you a few names of local babysitters, all of which they have used recently to babysit their own children.
Carswell Farm is located on the South Devon with plenty to keep the kids happy whether it is days spent making sandcastles, finding secluded beaches, rock pooling, hiring bikes, adventures in ruined castles, trips on steam trains and ferry boats. The wonderful Erme estuary and Mothecombe beach, with over 130 acres of sand at low tide, is just a couple of miles away. Explore the nearby picturesque towns of Kingsbridge, Dartmouth and Salcombe or visit the historic port of Plymouth.
