Unwind and get back into nature in these gorgeous family cottages, located in the stunning Brecon Beacon National Park. Sited on a working organic farm, little ones can try everything from collecting eggs to lamb feeding (in the Spring season!), in between all the den building, stargazing, hiking up majestic mountains, exploring ancient woodlands and making the most of the on-site play area. Aber Cottages are great self-catering properties, and an ideal base for adventurers and fresh air fans.

About this place

Best bits

  • The pristine dark skies offer some of the best stargazing we’ve seen. And when the weather is clear, a telescope is provided so you can spot all sorts of astral wonders.
  • As well as a football table, there’s an enviable games, books and DVD collection, suitable for all ages. Ensuring hours of fun, and light packing.
  • There is so much brilliant outdoor space. An enclosed play area for younger children, a large lawn for family games, and wild woods ripe for exploring.

Top tips

  • Don't forget your wellies and rain coats – just in case the weather takes a turn.
  • Both cottages have cots, a high chair and a stairgate, so you don’t have to weigh the car down with hoards of baby bits.
  • The rural location means mobile signal at Aber Cottage is poor, but good wifi will keep you connected to the outside world. If the idea of digital detox doesn’t entice you...

About the owners

Liz Matthews

There are three generations of Matthews’ happily living at Aberhyddnant.  Paul and Liz who live in the main farm house, their daughters Bethan and Nicola  and now their grandson Lloyd.

The family first moved to the farm from Atherstone in 1983 and together worked to rebuild a long neglected farm into a productive area of land able to support the family and conserve the beautiful local countryside.

We try to be as self sufficient as possible, producing our own feed for the horses and livestock, our own meat and eggs for the house and for sale plus each year we try hard to grow our own vegetables.  We have even installed a Micro-Hydro unit to supply electricity, solar thermal water heating and a biomass batch boiler with all the logs used for fuel are from fallen trees or thinnings.

All of us, people and animals, love welcoming visitors to the farm and are happy to spend time talking about the farm and the joys of living in the part of the world.

Owner recommendations

  • Be sure to visit Waterfall Country, where you’ll find many beautiful walks. The Elidir trail is great for all abilities.

  • Younger children will love Cantref Adventure Farm with its jungle swamp ride, animal feeding and crazy golf. Parents will love their on-site cafe.

  • For pony trekking, climbing, zip wires, and more adventure activities, check out Llangorse Multi Activity Centre.

  • For steam lovers try Brecon Mountain Railway near Merthyr Tydfil. The lovely route through Welsh countryside boasts breathtaking views across the Beacons and Taf Fechan reservoir.

  • If you’re interested in history, geology and culture be sure to check out the Big Pit – one of Britain’s leading mining museums. Or The National Showcaves Centre for Wales with its spectacular cave tours.
