Tucked away in the bountiful forestlands of Mid-Wales, this charming eco-retreat is the perfect green getaway for you and your family. The converted stone cottage is on the edge of a wooded valley, giving you the feeling of an off-grid escape but with plenty of modern conveniences, and in close reach of some of the Welsh Borderlands’ most wonderful old market towns. Step out into the forest and explore the green trails and local wildlife!

About this place

Best bits

  • Drovers Retreat has some seriously great eco-credentials including an electric car charger, renewable energy sources, and water supplied from a local spring.
  • Surrounded by a rich wooded landscape and natural scenery, the cottage is a prime location for nature enthusiasts and offers an array of enriching walking routes.
  • The forested borderland in Mid-Wales is a hot spot for the best of British wildlife - spot red kites, local roe deer, badgers, and rabbits during your stay.

Top tips

  • Remember to pack your slippers! The original flagstones are part of the cottage’s charm but can feel a little cold under the feet.
  • Walking boots and wellies are a must if you want to make the most of all that this woodland-rich corner of Wales has to offer.
  • The honesty shop has delicious locally made frozen ready meals and basic staples for emergencies.

About the owners

Bob and Carolyn Kennard

Following some years in Africa working in agriculture, in 1988 we moved to Graig Farm and set up one of the first organic meat companies, working with a group of local organic farmers, as well as a farmers co-operative which supplied supermarkets with organic lamb and beef. The farm was even visited by the then Prince of Wales in 2001 who also wrote a foreword for Bob’s book ‘Much Ado About Mutton’ in 2014. After selling the business in 2009, we continued to live on the farm and opened Drovers Retreat in 2017 in hope of sharing its joys.

Owner recommendations

  • The Elan Valley

Famous for its vast dams, reservoirs, and spectacular scenery, The Elan Valley is Birmingham’s major water supplier and is only 25 minutes away from the cottage.

  • The Judges Lodgings, Presteigne

This museum is a window into the 1870s where you can uncover the lives of Victorian judges.

  • Beautiful Border Towns

Dotted along the scenic Mid-Wales landscape are some wonderful towns and villages just waiting to be explored from Knighton to Rhayader.

  • The Victorian Mineral Water Spa

Llandrindod Wells is a quintessential Wesh spa town dating back to the 19th century and has some mineral-rich springs renowned for their healing properties and famed by the Victorians.

  • Gilfach Nature Reserve

Just a short distance from Rhayader, this nature reserve is owned by The Radnorshire Wildlife Trust and is worth a visit to discover the magnificent landscapes and diverse wealth of wildlife.
