About Blackdown Yurts

4 traditional nomadic Mongolian yurts in a tranquil hidden valley in Devon’s beautiful Blackdown Hills provide a child-friendly retreat for those of you looking for a peaceful, safe haven away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Set within 30 acres of a small-holding, each yurt is tucked away in its own secluded spot, with loads of space to explore, adventure or unwind.

The Yurts

Badger, Woodpecker and Buzzard yurts each sleep up to 6 people and Willow yurt sleeps up to 4. The larger yurts are colourfully decorated with embroidered hangings from India and printed throws on the beds. The three largest yurts each have a double bed, two large single beds and two smaller single beds all made out of reclaimed wood with wool-stuffed bedrolls and pillows. One of the single beds can be tucked away in each of the larger yurts to make space for a cot if required. Willow yurt has a double bed and two narrow single beds. Bed linen is provided along with blankets and hot water bottles in case the nights are chilly (you need to bring your own towels). All of the yurts have coir matting on the floor with welcoming rugs, fluffy sheepskins and plump pouffes around a central log burner (with fireguard) making sure that you are cosy come what may.

The yurts are located in a flat field with rural views onto adjacent fields where sheep may be present. Badger and Woodpecker are next to one another on one side of the field but each has its own private space, enclosed by a high Devon bank scattered with wild flowers. The field is ideal for ball games. Buzzard is located in one corner of the field, in a slightly raised position affording it lovely views down the valley. Willow is set slightly apart from the other three at the other end of the field and is surrounded by a screen of willow trees to give a little privacy. Willow and Badger are closest to the parking area and the communal barn. Buzzard is furthest from the parking area and communal barn.

To help preserve the simplicity of yurt life, the owners have tried to keep everything as eco-friendly and back to basics as possible. Each yurt has spring water on tap and a composting toilet outside. There is no electricity at the yurts themselves (but if you need to charge devices there are plug points in the communal barn). At night the yurts are lit by fairy lights, candles or lanterns.

All cutlery, pots and pans etc are supplied so you just need to bring food. The tin roof field kitchen next to each yurt is equipped with a camping gas stove and a barbeque. Eco-friendly washing up liquid and soap are supplied and there's also a range of bins to help you recycle as much as possible.

Creature comforts have been provided; the communal barn has comfy sofas, a log-burning stove, large dining table and a few modern extras, such as a kettle, toaster, gas rings for cooking, and two fridge/freezers. Ice blocks and cool boxes are provided for you to keep essentials such as milk cold at your yurt.

New for 2018 are four brand new shower rooms created from rustic and reclaimed materials but with modern washing facilities. Each shower room has a basin, toilet and shower complete with bench and hanging hooks to make showering solo or with little people a lot easier.

Travel cot, highchair, baby bath and toddler toilet seat available on request.

Get Back To Nature

We encourage you to get back to nature and enjoy the wildlife and wildflowers of our idyllic green valley. It is the perfect antidote to the plastic toy brigade: fresh air, lots of space, no noise pollution - just nature and whatever you might encounter to make your stay unique. Browse Katie’s collection of natural history guides, join her on a bat walk or borrow a bat detector to try to hear our nocturnal visitors for yourselves.

Out And About

The Blackdown Hills has hundreds of footpaths, riverbanks, ancient woodland and villages waiting to be explored. Maps are available should you decide to go off and explore. There are plenty of excellent places to eat and drink locally, again just ask for favourite pubs and restaurants.
If you'd like to venture further afield, you are in an ideal position for exploring the beautiful Jurassic World Heritage coastline, Dartmoor, Exmoor and the cathedral city of Exeter. Rent an old-fashioned deckchair and tuck into a cream tea at the seaside villages of Beer or Branscombe. There are many outstanding National Trust properties nearby whilst the acclaimed Eden Project is just an hour and a half away by car.

Getting There

Blackdown Yurts is conveniently located close to junctions 27 and 28 of the M5 and the A30 at Honiton, making it easy to access for a short break from the south-east, Bristol and the Midlands and from elsewhere in the south-west.

Any booking of three or more people of the same sex will need the owners' agreement before a booking is made (unless they are members of the same family, but from different generations).

We can cater for group bookings, and welcome parties, wedding events, corporate bookings and most other group events. However, in order to ensure privacy and peace for our guests, we will only take group bookings for the entire site.

Website accuracy
Whilst every care is taken to ensure that the details in this website, including any promotional emails, are correct at time of being published, we cannot accept responsibility for errors contained therein or results thereof. We are not responsible to you for unforeseen events or matters over which we have no control.

While we do our best to ensure that all offer information is up to date and accurate, very occasionally some advertised short breaks in certain accommodation may not always be available on all the dates advertised. Please enquire when booking.

Online Booking
Please check all personal details at the time of booking. We cannot take responsibility for booking or personal detail errors. All address and contact information must be correct at the time of booking for a successful payment to be processed. In the event of an unsuccessful payment we reserve the right to cancel your holiday if payment is not received within 7 working days.

All communications are sent via an automatic email server and rely on a valid email address being supplied. We cannot take responsibility for loss of communication e.g. booking confirmation emails etc. if contact information is incorrect. We will make every effort to supply you with the relevant booking confirmations and receipts.

Communicating with you
We carry out most communication with you by email. We tend to phone only in emergency or if we can't get you by email. We'll keep your details on record, but only basic information will be passed on to housekeepers (name and emergency phone number). We promise never to pass information on to other companies. We will only email offers and updates about Blackdown Yurts a few times a year, and of course we'll take you straight off our mailing list if you ask us to. Our Privacy Notice is available on our website.

Damages
Our guests tend to be careful and we appreciate this very much. Sometimes accidents happen, and we ask that you let us know about any accidental breakages straight away (by phone, text or email) so that we can arrange repairs/replacements before the next guests arrive. Please don't try to fix things yourselves (for example washing throws which can, and do, shrink or bleed dye)... we'd rather know and deal with things ourselves.

Non-availability
In the very unlikely event that the yurt you have booked becomes unavailable or unsuitable for your holiday for reasons beyond our control, we will make every reasonable effort to arrange suitable alternative accommodation. If this is not possible, or is not acceptable to you, all rental monies paid in advance will be refunded in full and you will have no further claim against Blackdown Yurts or the owner of the property.

The yurt descriptions
We make every effort to describe yurts and facilities as accurately as possible, and to keep information up-to-date, and work closely with owners to ensure this. Details are given in good faith and we cannot accept responsibility or liability for differences or for any disappointment caused where a guest has differing expectations to those detailed in the description.

Standards
We take pride in our accommodation, and maintain facilities to a high standard, however sometimes things do break down or malfunction. Please let us know straight away, by phone, text or email if something isn't working, and we will make every effort to sort it out straight away.

Dogs
We love dogs but regret that we are unable to accommodate your four-legged friends in our yurts.

Smoking
We have a no smoking rule for all our yurts. We ask you not to smoke inside any yurt, shed or outbuildings. Should you smoke outside, please clear any smoking litter.

Safety and security during your stay
The yurts are located in a rural environment, with uneven ground, some steep slopes, trees and ponds. In addition, there are wood burning stoves, candles, lighters & matches, open fires and BBQs. The yurts and the field kitchen are equipped with sharp kitchen knives. Please have fun, but also be aware of the risks and supervise and advise children accordingly. We cannot take responsibility for injury however caused.
